When Dave Grohl and his camp set out to create the first-ever Foo Fighters documentary, they didn’t go to just anyone to direct it. They tapped James Moll, an Oscar and Emmy Award-winning director of documentaries and films, with a secret penchant for rock. (meet dave)


“I had to meet with Dave, and I don’t know who the decision rested with in the end, but my first meeting with Dave was three hours long, and then it was a matter of weeks and I was in their rehearsal space with cameras,” Moll said, chatting from his Universal City, California, office. (meet dave)


“He asked me, ‘Do you like the Foo Fighters?’ And I said, ‘Of course! I love the Foo Fighters! Who doesn’t like the Foo?’” he added, laughing.


The documentary, Foo Fighters: Back and Forth, follows a man’s journey (Grohl) from being the drummer of the biggest rock band in America (Nirvana) to struggling with the band’s tragic ending to finding himself again with a project that explores his unrealized musical potential (Foo Fighters). The show will play for one time only in select movie theaters throughout the U.S. today, April 5 – exactly 17 years after Kurt Cobain’s death on April 5, 1994. A live, 3D performance from the band will follow the film. (meet dave)


The documentary also will air as a VH1 Rock Doc on VH1, VH1 Classic and Palladia on Friday, April 8 at 10 p.m. EST/PT. (meet dave)


Though it’s worth a bet the Foos will announce a full slate of shows in the near future, for the time being, they're firmly focused on getting out Wasting Light (due April 12) and bringing this rock documentary to the masses. (meet dave)
