Ten Ways to Cut Down Fat

It's one of nature's cruelest jokes: Some women can scarf down any mega calorie food that they want and not gain a single gram, while the rest of us only have to look at a cheeseburger to feel our jeans tighten.

Yeah, it's hard not to envy those eat what-they-want chicks, especially when it comes to their bodies metabolism: The biochemical process that converts food into calories and then burns them off as energy. They seem to be blessed with one that's fast and efficient, something we've been told we can't control. But you can, as research shows. Though you won't go from someone with a slow-as-a-sloth metabolism to being an instant calorie incinerator, there are ways you can optimise the metabolism you were born with. How? With little tricks that help your body burn calories faster while you're at play and at rest, explains Madelyn H. Fernstrom, Ph.D., professor and director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Weight Management Center, US and author of The Runner's Diet. And nope, none of them involve weird diets, insane workouts, bizarre supplements, or going hungry.

Whether you're trying to lose a few pounds or you want to maintain your current weight yet be able to eat more, check out these research-backed tips. You can decide to adopt a few or all nine either way, you'll see results. Have a Cool Drink Being dehydrated slows all your body functions, including metabolism, says Leslie J. Bonci, M.P.H., R.D., director of sports-medicine nutrition at the University of Pitts burgh Medical Center. So drink at least eight glasses of water each day. And make them icy: Drinking cold water may further up your ability to burn calories.

    Dine Exotically
Chili pepper and mustard seed-two spices often found in Thai, Mexican, Chinese, and Indian cuisines-can help your body burn extra calories, thanks to a com pound in each called capsaicin, says Fernstrom. One study found that when people consumed nearly one tea spoon of mustard and almost one teaspoon of chili sauce, their metabolism surged an average of 25 percent. Order spicy Thai chicken or a vindaloo curry, which contain these spices. Adding that spicy taste and sensation to your meal may help keep you from overeating, says Bonci.

    Savour Tea or Java
Research suggests that EGCG, an antioxidant in some hot or iced teas, can kick-start your body's engine. One study showed that when women consumed 300 grams-about the size of a mug-of oolong or green tea, their metabolism increased by 10 percent and 4 percent, respectively, for two hours. Tea also contains caffeine, which gives your metabolism a slight nudge. Other caffeine-rich options are coffee, energy drinks, and some sodas.

    Where Do the Calories Go?
Between 60 and 70 percent of the calories needed for your resting metabolic rate go toward sustaining your heartbeat, breathing, and major organs like the brain and kidneys. The other 30 to 40 percent help maintain body tissues and muscle mass.

    Pump Iron
Another muscle-mass booster (and thus calorie burner) is resistance training: Working with free weights or weight machines. After 10 weeks of basic strength-training two or three times a week, your resting metabolic rate could go up by six percent, so you'd burn an extra 75 to 100 calories per day, says Westcott. To build muscle, do at least one set (i.e., 12 to 15 reps) of exercises per 30-minute workout targeting your thighs, back, abs, shoulders, arms, and calves. Try to work up to two to three sets per session .

    Chow Down First Thing
"After eight or so hours of not eating, your metabolism is stalled," explains Molly Kimball, R.D., CSSD, sports dietitian at Ochsners' Elmwood Fitness Center in New Orleans, US. "Breakfast is the fuel that will stoke your metabolism again ." A smart morning meal should have a 50-30-20 ratio: 50 percent complex carbohydrates, 30 percent protein, and 20 percent fat. No time? C'mon, even the busiest chick can whip up something. Think peanut butter on whole-wheat toast or cottage cheese and fruit . If you're super crunched, make a smoothie or parfait with low-fat yogurt, protein powder, fruit, and nuts.

    Load Up on the Bs
"B vitamins are the oil that greases the wheels of your metabolic engine," says Mark Hyman, M.D., of the Institute for Functional Medicine, and author of Ultra metabolism . " If you can't get these five from your diet, take a multivitamin."

    Pile On the Protein
Protein is a powerful calorie torcher. First, digesting protein takes more energy than digesting carbs or fat does, says Kimball. Also, consuming protein helps you build and maintain muscle mass, and the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, even at rest. In addition, eating protein makes you absorb sugar more slowly, so your blood sugar doesn't soar- and then plunge-after a sugary snack . So try to get 30 percent of your daily calories from protein-rich foods: Think lean fish, beef, and poultry; skim milk; nonfat yogurt; eggs; beans; and nuts.

    Eat Often,
Just Smaller You would think that drastically cutting back on your daily calorie intake would be the secret to melting away pounds. After all, the less you ingest, the fewer calories your body has to torch, right? But it doesn't work that way. Scaling down your caloric count too severely tricks your system into thinking that food is scarce, prompting your metabolism to freeze…and your body to hang on to its fat preserves. On the other hand, if you eat more often rather than less, your metabolism gets fired up and stays elevated all day long, burning calories. "The very act of eating gets your metabolism going because your body has to break down the food during digestion, and that requires energy," says Bonci. By consuming five or so smaller, 300-to-500-calorie healthy meals about every four hours, your metabolism will chug along strong all day long without stalling, explains Dr Hyman.Read More

Concussion: concutere ("to shake violently") or the Latin concussus ("action of striking together") - mild brain injury, mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI), mild head injury (MHI), minor head trauma

Concussion, from the Latin concutere ("to shake violently") or the Latin concussus ("action of striking together"), is the most common type of traumatic brain injury. The terms mild brain injury, mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI), mild head injury (MHI), minor head trauma, and concussion may be used interchangeably, although the latter is often treated as a narrower category. The term "concussion" has been used for centuries and is still commonly used in sports medicine, while "MTBI" is a technical term used more commonly nowadays in general medical contexts. Frequently defined as a head injury with a temporary loss of brain function, concussion can cause a variety of physical, cognitive, and emotional symptoms.

Treatment of concussion involves monitoring and rest. Symptoms usually go away entirely within three weeks, though they may persist, or complications may occur. Repeated concussions can cause cumulative brain damage such as dementia pugilistica or severe complications such as second-impact syndrome.

Due to factors such as widely varying definitions and possible underreporting of concussion, the rate at which it occurs annually is not known; however it may be more than 6 per 1,000 people. Common causes include sports injuries, bicycle accidents, car accidents, and falls; the latter two are the most frequent causes among adults. Concussion may be caused by a blow to the head, or by acceleration forces without a direct impact. The forces involved disrupt cellular processes in the brain for days or weeks. On the battlefield, MTBI is a potential consequence of nearby explosions.

It is not known whether the concussed brain is structurally damaged the way it is in other types of brain injury (albeit to a lesser extent) or whether concussion mainly entails a loss of function with physiological but not structural changes. Cellular damage has reportedly been found in concussed brains, but it may have been due to artifacts from the studies. It is now thought that structural and psychiatric factors may both be responsible for the effects of concussion. Read More

Tips for Getting Pregnant Faster

herbal medicine schools ~ Tips for Getting Pregnant Faster : Dos and don'ts of increasing your chances of getting pregnant.

    1. Do get a preconception checkup.

Before you officially start trying, get a preconception checkup. Ask your doctor about prenatal vitamins that contain folic acid, which will decrease your risk of having a baby with neural tube defects, such as spina bifida. "Do this the cycle before you start trying," Hillard tells WebMD. "If you have any underlying medical problems, they need to be under control before you can safely become pregnant."

    2. Do get to know your cycle.

Sex education is key, says Hillard. "Women need to really understand their cycle and when they are most likely to become pregnant," she says. Ovulation is the best time to get pregnant.

"Being aware of the symptoms of ovulation [which include] changes in cervical mucus such as a thin watery, mucus-like discharge is also helpful," she says. Other signs of ovulation can include a one-sided twinge of pain. "This is the time to focus on having sex."

Ovulation prediction kits can also help predict the best time to get pregnant, says James Goldfarb, MD, director of the infertility service at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland. "They assure a patient that they are ovulating, and if you are having infrequent intercourse, this tells you when to have it to increase your chances of getting pregnant "

The first day of your menstrual period is day one. "Start testing on day nine and keep going until you get a positive," advises Joanne Piscitelli, MD, an associate professor of gynecology at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. Women with a 28-day cycle tend to ovulate on day 14, but many women have longer or shorter cycles, so casting a wide net can help you be sure.

Use of birth control may muddy the playing field. Many women spend half their life trying not to get pregnant by using birth control pills or other contraception methods, but is it OK to start trying to get pregnant the minute you scrap your birth control method?

"Years ago, the conventional wisdom was to wait a certain amount of time after stopping birth control to try to get pregnant but that is no longer true. You can start trying to conceive right after you stop birth control," Goldfarb says. The only downside is that you may not ever get your period, so tracking ovulation may be difficult, and it will be hard to date the pregnancy initially. For this reason, "some people may feel better waiting until they get one period on their own," he says.

    3. Don't worry about the best positions for getting pregnant.

Myths abound about the best positions for getting pregnant, but they are just that -- myths. There is really no scientific evidence saying that the missionary position is better than the woman being on top when it comes to maximizing your chances of making a baby.

"Very rarely, a woman's cervix is in an unusual position where certain positions can make a difference," Goldfarb tells WebMD.

Certain gravity-defying positions, such as sitting or standing during intercourse, however, may discourage sperm from traveling upstream. "It's a matter of gravity [and] you don't want all the semen to run out -- and semen are quick little critters," Hillard says. "Having sex with the man on top [missionary position] may best allow sperm to pool in the vagina," she suggests.

    4. Do lay low right after intercourse.

You have probably heard this one before -- lie in bed with your feet in the air after having sex to increase your chances of getting pregnant. The verdict? Not (totally) true. "It's good advice to lay in bed for 10 to 15 minutes after intercourse, but you don't need your feet in the air," Goldfarb says. "Your pelvis does not move when you put your legs in the air." Don't go the bathroom during this time either, he says. "If you wait 10 to 15 minutes, the sperm that is going to get into the cervix will be in the cervix."

    5. Don't overdo it.

Having sex like rabbits even during ovulation will not necessarily increase your chances of getting pregnant. It may seem like a good idea, but some men's sperm count will deplete if they ejaculate too often, Goldfarb says. "In general, every other night around the time of ovulation helps increase your chance of getting pregnant," he says. Sperm can live up to 72 hours after intercourse. That said, if you and your mate enjoy having sex more frequently, he can get a semen analysis after he has ejaculated several times in a row. This test can tell if his sperm quality or quantity is depleted by frequent ejaculation. If it is not, then feel free to have sex as often as you like.

Speaking of sperm, "wearing tight-fitting clothing can negatively affect sperm count," Piscitelli says. So too can spending time in hot tub or Jacuzzi. Your man's cell phone habits may also affect your chances of becoming pregnant. A recent study in the journal Fertility and Sterility showed that men who used a hands-free device with a cell phone and kept their phone close to their testicles had impaired sperm quality. And while you are telling your partner where to keep his cell phone, you may want to tell him to pass on the edamame and other soy foods. Men who eat a lot of soy foods may have a lower sperm concentration than men who don't eat soy foods, according to a study published online in Human Reproduction.

    6. Do de-stress any way you can.

Trying to get pregnant can be stressful, and stress can certainly derail ovulation, Hillard says. It can also cause sexual dysfunction and performance anxiety for men. "There is some evidence that acupuncture can help reduce stress and increase your chances of becoming pregnant," Goldfarb says. While excessive alcohol use is not wise when trying to get pregnant, "a mid-cycle glass of wine to relax and have intercourse can be helpful," he says. Bottom line: Anything that helps you de-stress and takes the pressure off trying to get pregnant will help you increase your chances of getting pregnant.

    7. Do lead a healthy lifestyle.

Exercising is a good thing, but when you are trying to conceive, you can get too much of a good thing, Goldfarb says. "Too much exercise can cause you not to ovulate," he says, explaining that excessive exercise can stop the pituitary gland from telling the ovaries to ovulate. While this threshold is largely individual, he says "exercising seven days a week for 45 to 50 minutes a day will cause a problem in the majority of women."

That doesn't mean you should stop exercising the minute you start trying to get pregnant. If you are a hard-core exerciser and are still getting your period regularly, your exercise regimen is most likely not a problem, he says. But, Goldfarb adds, your menstrual period is not the first thing to go if you are exercising too heavily. "The first thing that happens is that you have a shorter second half of your cycle. You should have a period 14 days after you ovulate, but too much exercise can shorten this phase." This would be the first hint that you need to curtail your fitness regimen. He suggests tracking how long it takes you to get a period after you ovulate as the best way to know for sure.

Goldfarb says the best way to increase your chances of getting pregnant while getting the health benefits of regular exercise is to engage in moderate exercise, such as a half an hour of aerobic activity like walking three times a week. Watch what you eat, too; dieting is a double-edged sword for women trying to get pregnant. "If you are obese and you lose weight, your period may come back, but if you are too thin and not getting your period, you need to gain weight to get pregnant," Goldfarb says.

Stop smoking to increase your chances of getting pregnant," Hillard says. Aside from all the other negative health effects of smoking, this nasty habit also decreases fertility. "It affects estrogen levels and ovulation."

Eighty-five percent of women will become pregnant within one year of trying," Hillard adds." If it is taking longer than a year, consult a doctor for an infertility workup. For women older than 35, some doctors recommend consulting a specialist after six months of trying.

Tips Ways to Boost Your Fertility

herbal medicine schools ~ Tips Ways to Boost Your Fertility : Trying to get pregnant? Pay attention to simple things -- diet, timing of sex, even your lubricant -- and you may conceive faster.

Read on for the best suggestions culled from fertility specialists who often recommend these measures before turning to assisted reproduction.

See When You're Most Fertile During Your Monthly Cycle

    1. Her Fertility Booster: Weight Control
Being underweight or overweight can delay the time it takes a woman to conceive, research suggests.

Preconception weight is often an overlooked factor in fertility, says William Gibbons, MD, director of the division of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and president-elect of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. But research suggests keeping a healthy weight can help with conception. "I am not sure women think about it as an issue for their fertility," he says.

In one study, researchers evaluated the body mass index (BMI) of 2,112 pregnant women. A BMI of 18.5-24.9 is considered normal weight, 25-29.9 is overweight, and 30 or higher is obese.

Women in the study who had a pre-pregnancy BMI of 25-39 had a twofold increase in the time it took to get pregnant. A lower BMI is even worse, the researchers found. Having a BMI below 19 increased the time to conception fourfold. The study was published in Fertility and Sterility in 2004.

Gibbons tells women to stay at a healthy weight when trying to conceive.

    2. His Fertility Booster: Protect Those Sperm
Over the years, researchers have investigated whether everyday exposures -- to such things as tight underwear, heated car seats, laptop computers, or cell phones -- may impair male fertility.

The idea that changing to looser underwear -- boxers instead of briefs -- will boost fertility by keeping genital temperatures down is now somewhat of an old wives' tale, says Dale McClure, MD, president of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. He is also a clinical professor of urology at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle.

Although earlier studies seemed to point to boxers as the better choice for preserving fertility, McClure says, ''some of the more scientific data in the past few years didn't show a major difference.''

What about exposing the testicles to other sources of heat? The American Society for Reproductive Medicine says controlling temperature doesn't play much of role in boosting fertility. But some doctors, including McClure, do recommend staying away from certain sources of heat. Sitting in a hot tub day after day, even if a man has no known fertility problems, should be avoided, McClure says.

In a study published in the International Brazilian Journal of Urology, researchers found that repeated exposure to high water temperatures through hot tubs or hot baths did have an adverse effect on men's fertility.

Other exposures under investigation by researchers have yet to prove a link.

For instance, in a study published in Human Reproduction, researchers found that scrotal temperatures went up in laptop users who used the computer on their laps, and warned that long-term exposures to high scrotal temperatures may harm sperm.

Even though there isn't enough data to prove the link, McClure says he still wouldn't recommend that a man who wants to be a father keep his laptop on his lap for extended periods of time.

In another study, Cleveland Clinic researchers collected sperm samples and found that those samples exposed to the radiofrequency electromagnetic waves from cell phones for one hour were adversely affected compared to samples not exposed. In a report published in Fertility and Sterility, the researchers conclude: ''We speculate that keeping the cell phone in a trouser pocket in talk mode may negatively affect spermatozoa and impair male fertility."

Despite that finding from respected researchers at a well-regarded institution, McClure says he is "more concerned about hot tubbing."

    3. Her Fertility Booster: Watch the Beverages
Drinking too much coffee or too much alcohol can impair a woman's fertility, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine says.

Experts say that more than five cups of coffee a day or the equivalent, about 500 milligrams of caffeine, are associated with lower fertility. In another recent study, the researchers who looked at body weight also looked at caffeine and tea intake. They found that drinking more than six cups a day had an adverse effect on fertility.

But don't give up your daily cup of coffee just yet. Moderate caffeine consumption, says Gibbons, seems to be OK. According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, one or two cups a day is acceptable. His advice for women who are coffee or soda drinkers: "Stay under 200 to 250 milligrams of caffeine a day."

The studies on alcohol intake and women's fertility have produced mixed findings. But Swedish researchers reporting in Fertility and Sterility have found that women who drank two alcoholic beverages a day decreased their fertility by nearly 60%.

Once again, moderation is key, say experts. Although those higher levels of alcohol, such as two drinks or more a day, should be avoided when trying to get pregnant, "there is no evidence to indicate that more moderate alcohol consumption adversely affects fertility," according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. And, of course, once you find out you are pregnant, you'll want to cut out the alcohol completely because drinking can increase the risk of birth defects.

Smoking cigarettes can impair both a woman and a man's fertility, research suggests. Researchers from Portugal reviewed the literature on cigarette smoking and fertility. They found that it affects how receptive the uterus is to the egg. In men, smoking can reduce sperm production and damage DNA. The study is published in Current Opinion in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

For women, giving up smoking before pregnancy is wise, experts suggest, because smoking while pregnant has been shown to boost the risk of miscarriage.

Taking advantage of what doctors call the "fertile window" can boost your chances of pregnancy. It's best defined, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, ''as the six-day interval ending on the day of ovulation." And pregnancy is most likely to occur with intercourse within the three days before the day of ovulation.

Patients often wait until the day of ovulation or later to have intercourse, says Richard Paulson, MD, chief of the division of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, Los Angeles, and a professor of obstetrics and gynecology there. He tells them: "Err on the early side."

He also advises keeping close track of ovulation -- either by the calendar method, figuring ovulation occurs about 14 days before the menstrual period is due, or by using an ovulation predictor kit, widely sold online and in drugstores.

Delaying lovemaking -- or as some couples say, ''saving up'' -- isn't going to boost the chances of pregnancy, McClure tells couples who ask about this approach.

"After about a week, the [sperm] count goes up a bit, but the motility decreases," he says. Not having sex for more than five days may affect sperm counts adversely, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. But intervals as short as two days don't harm sperm density, it says.

Although daily intercourse produced the highest pregnancy rate in one study, it may pose too much stress on the couple, according to the society. And every-other-day sex, in the same study, produced nearly as good a pregnancy rate.

With more frequent intercourse, couples may turn more to vaginal lubricants. That's OK, doctors concur, if the lubes are picked wisely.

According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, some lubricants can actually decrease fertility. That's because some have spermicides.

What to use? "Canola oil," says Gibbons.

"Even peanut oil is good," says McClure. It's crucial, he says, to avoid lubricant with spermicidal agents.

Impromptu household lubes may not be good either, he says. "I had a patient yesterday with a great [sperm] count and no motility [swimming ability]," McClure says. When he asked a few more questions, he got the root of the problem. "He was using soap for a lubricant." So he informed the patient, "Soap killed the sperm."

You also want to avoid commercially available water-based lubricants. According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, commercially available water-based lubricants, such as Astroglide, KY Jelly, and Touch may inhibit sperm motility by 60% to 100% within 60 minutes of incubation. Canola oil, however, did not have the same effect.

The studies comparing lubricants have been published over the years in a variety of journals, including Human Reproduction and Fertility and Sterility.

Exposures to pesticide, especially agricultural pesticides, may harm both men and women's fertility, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine warns.

Exposure to some solvents and toxins -- including those used in printing businesses and dry cleaning establishments -- can adversely affect women's fertility.

Best Hair and Makeup Shortcuts - Quick Beauty Tips

herbal medicine schools ~ Best Hair and Makeup Shortcuts - Quick Beauty Tips : Whether you've hit the snooze button one too many times or have a last-minute party to primp for, we—and you—know that sooner or later you're going to need fast hair and makeup tricks—little fixes that make a big impact. The key: Always be prepared. With the right products and tools already on hand, plus these simple, quick beauty tips, you can handle any time crunch and look great in minutes.

You're racing the clock to get to work on time.
Speedy Solution Focus on using just a few key cosmetics in all the right places, says New York City-based makeup artist Paula Dorf: First, apply concealer anywhere you want to camouflage redness or discoloration. Next, perk up your lashes with an eyelash curler. Add one swipe of no-run mascara to upper lashes only and finish with cream blush, rubbed with your fingers onto the apples of your cheeks and then dabbed onto your lips for a hint of color.
Tools You Need Concealers: Clarins Instant Light Complexion Perfecter $33; clarins.com); mascara: Maybelline New York Great Lash Waterproof ($6; at drugstores); cream blush: NARS Cream Blush ($26; sephora.com).
Your hair's dirty—and there's no time to shower.
Speedy Solution Instead of washing and blow-drying, apply a little hair powder (even baby powder) on dry strands, close to the scalp, or sprinkle on a brush and comb through. The powder will absorb excess oil and make hair look less greasy. Getting hair up and off your face can also make you look pulled together quickly. "If your hair is long, twist the back up and pin it to hold," suggests Allison Luongo, a stylist for Bumble and bumble salon in New York City. A ponytail's even easier and lends instant polish—just smooth the ends with no more than a dime-sized drop of styling cream or glossing serum.
Tools You Need Hair powder: Bumble and bumble Hair Powder ($35; bumbleandbumble.com); styling creams: John Frieda Frizz-Ease Secret Weapon Flawless Finishing Créme ($6; at drugstores) or Herbal Essences None of Your Frizzness Créme ($3; at drugstores); hair accessories: Scünci No-Damage Elastic Polybands, ($4; at drugstores).
You spot a pimple—right before your presentation.
Speedy Solution "For a blemish, the ideal remedy is a color corrector that will help neutralize the red," Dorf says. Use corrective concealer sparingly just over the red areas to even out the color; then, using a brush, lightly pat a regular concealer (in a shade similar to your skin color) on top of that. For staying power, finish with a light dusting of loose powder tapped over the area.
Tools You Need Corrective concealer: Physicians Formula Concealer 101 Perfecting Concealer Duo ($7; at drugstores), which contains both a corrective color plus concealer in one kit; loose powder: T. LeClerc Loose Powder in Translucide ($45; 800-788-4731).
Your lunch-hour spin class left you sweaty—and short on time.
Speedy Solution Wash your face with a pre-moistened cleansing cloth to get rid of pore-clogging dirt, oil and sweat. Then apply a tinted moisturizer. "This complements your natural, after-gym flush, giving you an even healthier glow," Dorf says. Use a concealer under eyes; finish with a swipe of fresh lip color.
Tools You Need Pre-moistened cleansing cloths: Olay Daily Facials Express Wet Cleansing Cloths ($5; at drugstores); tinted moisturizer: Paula Dorf Face Tint SPF15 in Jet Set Glo ($40; pauladorf.com); concealer: Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage ($28; lauramercier.com), which comes in a two-tone kit in six different shades; lip color: Lancôme Color Design in All Done Up ($22; lancome.com).
You forgot all about the after-work soiree.
Speedy Solution "For a last-minute soirée, there's nothing that creates a sultry look quicker than the smoky eye," Dorf says. All you need is a blending brush and a dark eye shadow in a shade like deep brown, navy or steel. "Smudge the shadow onto your upper and lower lash line and flare out around the corners for a dramatic evening look," Dorf adds. Add a dusting of allover radiance-boosting powder and a swipe of dramatic lipstick with a touch of sparkle.
Tools You Need Eye brush and shadow: Sonia Kashuk Small Eyeshadow Brush ($4; at Target stores) and Stila Eye Shadow in Charcoal ($22; sephora.com); allover powder: Prescriptives Magic Liquid Powder ($35; prescriptives.com); lipstick: Clinique Butter Shine Lipstick in Pink Goddess ($14; clinique.com).
Your nails need rehab and there's no salon in sight.
Speedy Solution Get groomed nails in no time with sheer, light and fast-drying products. First, remove any chipped polish with polish-remover wipes (stash them in your purse or desk drawer). Then paint on just one layer of sheer polish (pale pinks and neutrals work best) and, if you have time, one layer of topcoat – both of the fast-drying variety, recommends Ji Baek, owner of Rescue Beauty Lounge in New York City. Some products even have the color and the topcoat in one.
Tools You Need Polish-remover wipes: Cutex Essential Care Advanced Nail Polish Remover Pads ($3 for six; at drugstores); polishes to try: Maybelline New York Express Finish Fast-Dry Nail Enamel in Sheer Ivory and Show Me the Honey! ($4 each) and Revlon ColorStay Always On Nail Enamel in Endless Pink and Invincible Bronze ($6; all at drugstores).

Tips For Avoiding Panic Attacks

herbal medicine schools - Tips For Avoiding Panic Attacks : Panic attacks feel a lot like heart attacks. A panic attack might cause your heart to race, and it might cause you to become short of breath. You might find that you feel dizzy or light headed, and they are characterized with the feeling of life or death importance. It is not uncommon to believe that you are dying or about to die when you are having a panic attack. Fortunately for sufferers, they are usually not of a long duration, and will stop when they have run their course, usually a few minutes, or when the cause of the panic is removed.

If you are terrified that you might have another panic attack, you may just end up cutting yourself off from everything in order to avoid having another. You might hide from the world, or otherwise separate yourself from the friends and family who might otherwise be able to help you. If this sounds familiar to you, then you need to consider seeking professional help to empower you to dispel the threat of panic attacks that hangs over your head.

You may also be able to help yourself by avoiding the situations that cause you to have your panic attacks in the first place. One of the biggest causes of panic attacks is stress, and if you are constantly in stressful situation, then you will be at a much higher risk for panic attacks in the future. This stress is not necessarily the stress that comes over a few days over a particular event; panic attacks are triggered by constant stress over a period of months or sometimes even longer. This stress is often too much for people to bear, and even if we do not realize that, our bodies do, and they rebel.

Panic attacks can also be caused by certain situations. If you get a panic attack every time you are running late, or stuck in traffic, or going over a bridge, then you need to make sure to avoid those situations to prevent these same events from triggering more panic attacks in the future. You can take a different route to work, leave early, and avoid roads that you know will be snarled with traffic or even head to a local place for dinner after work before facing the drive home.

If you practice avoiding panic attacks and chart where you were, what you were doing, and how you felt immediately prior to each panic attack, then you can use this information to avoid the things that trigger you. You may be able to save yourself a lot of trouble with your mental and even your physical health later down the road.

Panic attacks do not just feel remarkably like heart attacks; recent studies have linked experiencing panic attacks with an increased likelihood of actually having a heart attack later. Keep your odds low and keep your stress levels down to avoid panic attacks and to remain as healthy as possible. No one likes to suffer, and panic attacks certainly fall into the category of suffering.

If you are at risk for panic attacks or you have had them in the past, then you should examine the past causes of your panic attacks so that you can help yourself to avoid similar situations in the future. You should also get in contact with your doctor to find out if you may need medication or therapy to help you take charge of your life and get away from the panic attacks. It can be difficult to determine exactly the best means of preventing panic attacks, but you may get better results when pairing the practice of avoiding triggers with medication to help you feel calmer. A therapist can also help you learn mental tricks to help you ride through the panic attacks without completely losing your cool the next time you feel one coming on.

Before I get into the treatment of panic attacks, we’ll go over some of the basics as to what causes panic attacks to occur. Excessive anxiety is on of the main reasons why panic attacks occur, in fact, all a panic attack is a sudden spike of fear/anxiety that comes unexpectedly and without any obvious reason. If you are reading this article, however, you probably are well acquainted with panic attacks, and probably know more than you want to about them.

Dr. Angie Beltsos, fertility expert and medical director of the Fertility Centers of Illinois, shares these tips on boosting fertility:
    • Preconception Diet: Eat organic, fresh, nutrient-filled whole foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains as much as possible. Drink plenty of water every day and avoid smoking, caffeine, alcohol, fried foods and saturated fats.

There have been more clinical studies supporting the benefits of holistic techniques such as acupuncture, massage and yoga.
    • Age: Be aware that fertility declines with increasing age and problems accelerate for women past the age of 35. Consider trying to start your family earlier, or if necessary, seek infertility help sooner so that causes can be evaluated and treated properly.
    • Explore All Options: Since infertility has multiple causes, treatment options also vary. It is important to fully understand the cause of your fertility troubles, in order to effectively identify the best option for you and your partner.
