Demand for diamonds jumps in India 2011

MUMBAI - - Demand for diamonds jumps in India 2011 : A new story appears to be playing out in India with regard to diamond consumption. Demand for the precious stones set in jewellery surged 31% in India in 2010, as compared to diamond jewellery demand in China which grew by just 25%.

Currently, India accounts for 10% to 11% of global consumption. India's fetish for diamond jewellery has grown faster than that of China, according to Diamond Trading Company (DTC) CEO Varda Shine.

The DTC CEO who was in Mumbai at the start of the week said that De Beers and the DTC were pretty bullish on India. She noted that diamantaires in India have the most sophisticated, innovative and successful business sense and practices.

``If one looks into the competitive business process of selecting sightholders for DTC, I have no doubts that most of them will be Indians this year,'' she said. As demand outstrips supply, the CEO noted that the long-term outlook for diamond prices is set to rise.

The new sightholder list is to be announced by the end of 2011, for the period between April 2012 to March 2015, but the DTC CEO avers that India stands to get a large share of DTC's roughs pie.

Though the Indian consumer is content with smaller stones as compared to the Chinese consumer, demand is set to rise further this year, she added.

Growth in demand from India is based on the consumption of small diamonds in large volumes, around 80% of the carats consumed in India are small diamonds. In comparison, 80% of the carats consumed in China are of 0.5 carat and larger.

After India and China, the US market continues to account for 38% of global diamond demand. Shine noted that the US market is expected to grow in high single digits this year.

India is the largest diamond cutting centre and largest customer of rough diamonds, responsible for around 72% per cent of the worldwide consumption.

China and Israel corner only 11% and 7% of global rough consumption, respectively.

And, as diamond miners continue to struggle to keep pace with the growing demand from India and China, prices of roughs have reportedly risen as much as 91% from a six-year low in early 2009.

However, Shine expects a slowdown in India this year, starting now. Growth is expected to slip to 20% in 2011, as against 31% in 2010.

``We expect a slight slowdown in the ongoing current second quarter, but hope the industry in India will continue to grow,'' Shine said.

DTC's four-member delegation, led by Shine, was also scheduled to review its sightholders in India. DTC sells around 40% of the world's rough diamonds by value and has around 35 sightholders in India, of which 18 are based in Surat alone.

However, Rajeev Jain, chairman of the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council was not worried. ``The US is still the single largest diamond jewellery consumer market. India and China would together cross the US demand by 2015,'' he said.

Incidentally, miner and luxury jewellery retailer Harry Winston Diamond Corporation said that prices for polished diamonds have risen 9.5% this year and are expected to firm up further as producers struggle to meet Chinese and Indian demand.

An official reportedly said that earlier the diamond in Indian culture was not fully recognised except for the highest-ranking individuals, but the appreciation of the gems has now penetrated the middle class, which will push demand even higher. --- Read More

The national average price of regular gasoline rose 1.8 cents to $ 3.07 per gallon in the week ending Monday, the Energy Information Administration said. The price remained at its highest rate since October 13, 2008, for the fifth consecutive week. Prices are up 7.5%, or 21.4 cents, in the period. Prices are 15.2%, or 40.5 cents above a year ago, making the biggest premium since May 1917.

The increase in pump prices comes as crude oil futures rose above $ 90 a barrel, the highest level since October 2008, and gasoline futures prices have followed. Gasoline demand is stronger than expected in recent weeks and inventories at December 24 were sufficient to 22.9 days of demand, the lowest level since early September 2009 cover. Demand in the last week was the strongest since mid-August when the summer driving peak and appetite for gasoline in December was the strongest for the month since 2007.

Retail prices are now 25.4% lower than the record price of $ 4.114 a gallon hit July 7, 2008, the EIA data show.

The EIA said in its December 7 Short-Term Energy Outlook expects gasoline prices average $ 2.90 a gallon this month, an increase of $ 2.72 one year ago. That would be the highest price information in January since 2008. The price forecast is based on the U.S. benchmark crude averaged $ 84 per barrel this month, an increase of nearly $ 78.33 one year earlier. Front-month Nymex crude oil futures opened the year at $ 91.55 a barrel on Monday, its highest price since October 2008.

The price of crude oil is by far the biggest factor in retail gasoline prices, accounting for 71% of the price in November, EIA said. Awards in all regions, led by a 2.5 cent gain on the Gulf Coast.

AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report said Monday that gasoline averaged $ 3.072 a gallon, up 3 cents from one week ago, and up15 cents from one month ago. Retail gasoline was $ 2.660 per gallon one year ago, AAA said.
    Region Change Vs Price
    Week Ago Per Gallon
    East Coast +1.6c $3.082
    Midwest +1.6c $3.064
    Gulf Coast +2.5c $2.923

Kentuckys Retail Food Prices Rise 5% In First Quarter Of 2011
The latest Marketbasket Survey, conducted by the Kentucky Farm Bureau Federation in March 2011, indicates that average retail food prices made noticeable increases in supermarkets across the state during the first quarter of the year.

According to the survey results, the total cost of 40 basic grocery items was $114.94 - up by $5.73, or approximately 5.2 percent, from the same list of items reported in the fourth quarter of 2010. The first quarter 2011 Marketbasket total is $11.32, or 10.9 percent, higher than the same reporting period in 2010 ($103.62), but just $4.72, or 4.2 percent, higher than the fourth quarter of 2009 ($110.22).

Thirty of the 40 items on the list experienced increases in average price, thus pushing the overall Marketbasket price higher.

Of the six food groups recorded in the survey - beef, dairy, fruits and vegetables, grain, pork, and poultry - the grain category showed the greatest total increase with an average price jump of 14.1 percent. Bell peppers made the largest single-item increase with an average price jump of $0.74. The largest single-item decrease was for 32 oz. of vegetable oil, dropping an average of $0.67 in price.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that Americans spend approximately 10 percent of their disposable income on food each year. Of that money, 58 percent is used to purchase food that is eaten at home and 42 percent is for food eaten away from home (mainly at restaurants).

Kentucky is far from alone in the retail food price changes. Based on the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics' most recent Consumer Price Index data released in mid-March (which reflects figures through February 2011), food prices at the national level have increased by 2.8 percent during the last 12 months. All six of the food categories monitored by the bureau reflect price increases over this span. However, as energy and transportation prices must also be factored into the total cost of food production, it is also important to note that the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports energy costs increasing 9.8 percent in the previous three months (December-February) and gasoline prices increasing by 19.2 percent during the last 12 months. expected gas prices for april 9th, 2011 : Gas prices have surged this year, and although they remain below the record highs from 2008, prices are expected to continue moving higher ...

Bulls face test in first quarter earnings - Apr. 9, 2011
Gas prices have surged this year, and although they remain below the record highs from 2008, prices are expected to continue moving higher into the summer. That could spell trouble for the nascent rebound in consumer spending and put pressure on top-line sales growth.

At the same time, prices for many industrial and agricultural commodities have been sharply rising. Food producers have been looking for ways to deal with higher costs for wheat and corn, while rising cotton prices have led to hand wringing in the apparel industry.

"We're already starting to see some companies pass on cost increases," said Doug Roberts, chief market strategist at Channel Capital Research. In particular, he pointed to shrinking portion sizes in the food industry and the myriad of fees that airlines have come up with to deal with higher fuel costs. Read More

U.S. mood runs on gasoline | Philadelphia Inquirer | 04/09/2011
WASHINGTON - Quick: What do these things have in common? Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. The Japanese earthquake and tsunami. Wall Street volatility. A cranky, even angry American populace.

Answer: They all have something to do with gasoline. No matter what happens in the world today, just about everything points to fuel and the tricky politics that emerge when gas prices spike.

Americans ranked rising gas prices above subjects including Iraq, Afghanistan, immigration, terrorism, and taxes in an Associated Press-GfK poll late in March. Last fall, 54 percent called gas prices a highly important issue to them personally, but 77 percent said that in the latest poll. Read More
