“Sex keeps me fit and healthy — what can be better than that?” The Sun quoted Kelly, as saying. The Strictly Come Dancing star also revealed that she does not believe in dieting and never holds herself back from gorging on deserts.

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony Jet to Puerto Rico

Los Angeles (E! Online) – So much for Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony's big Valentine's Day demise. (Or so we're being led to believe...)

In the face of reports that the duo have been fighting and are headed for a split, E! News has learned exclusively that J.Lo and her hubby are spending a few days together in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where Anthony is scheduled to perform as part of his ongoing tour.

Two days ago, Lopez and Anthony met up with friends and family for dinner at Marmalade, a trendy, upscale restaurant in the old-town section of San Juan.

"Jennifer and Marc looked very happy, so it is hard for me to believe the rumors that their marriage is in trouble," the eatery's general manager, Trace Donaldson, tells E! News. "They were laughing and seemed to be having a great time."

The couple were joined by a group that included Lopez's sister, Lynda.

On Monday, the Out of Sight star's rep denied to E! a New York Daily News report that had the seemingly cozy couple planning to announce their breakup right after Anthony's Feb. 14 show at Madison Square Garden.

"There is no merit to the article," the rep said.

Lopez was spotted Dec. 26 boarding a private flight straight to Puerto Rico out of Van Nuys Airport.

Was Britney in India?

Is Britney Spears really dating dancer Sandip Soparrkar, as her manager ostensibly claims? Did she come to India primarily to meet Sandip?
    Britney
Morphed picture of Britney Spears and Sandip Soparrkar. For original click here

Was she here at all? DT uncovers contradictions and inconsistencies in the reports, emanating from many ‘sources’ & identities, about Britney’s purported visit to Jodhpur

Four days ago, there was news that Britney Spears had landed in Jodhpur to rehearse for the second video of her single, Womanizer, which dancer Sandip Soparrkar had been signed on to choreograph.

That news came amid buzz that Britney had actually come to see Sandip, with whom she was speculated to be having an affair.

The media, including DT, had carried those stories, and Sandip’s official denials, as also earlier news about Sandip’s performance at Madonna’s 50th birthday bash in England, and his attending a counselling session for her before her marriage to Guy Ritchie broke up. However, what DT didn’t publish were the most recent reports, that got us curious, sent ostensibly by Britney’s manager, Larry Rudolph, saying that Britney got her room in her Jodhpur hotel, Umaid Bhawan, shifted to one that had an interconnecting door to Sandip’s, and that after a workout, they both “locked themselves up” for an hour. The insinuation in this and other reports was clearly that Britney and Sandip were having an affair. A photo, supposedly of Sandip and Britney at Jodhpur, sent to us, again by ‘Larry’, is the one you see above – a clearly morphed picture with Sandip’s face tacked on to a picture of someone standing with Britney. The original, which is actually an old picture of Britney and Neil Patrick Harrison, is next to it.

All of this has been circulated by ‘Larry’ from Sandip’s email ID, and the same picture was mailed to our sister publication in Jaipur, this time by Sandip’s manager, and not by ‘Larry’ – but again from Sandip’s email ID. DT spoke to Sandip, his partner Jessy Randhawa, the hotel that Britney was supposed to be staying at in Jodhpur (she’s supposed to have left in the morning on December 29), and the CISF, that normally would provide some security cover to Britney if an international celebrity of her standing were landing at an Indian airport, and found more than a few glaring inconsistencies. You decide...

‘Maybe Britney wants a push in India?’
When first asked if Britney was in India, Jessy said, “You’ll have to ask Britney or Sandip. I wasn’t in Jodhpur.” But later, when contacted again, she said, “Yes, she was. For two days.” When told that there is not a single picture of hers in India, Jessy replied, “She came for two days, she rehearsed and she left. Sandip and I had a shoot this afternoon (on December 29, in Mumbai) which got cancelled, but he was here at 8 am. I’ve been in touch with Sandip’s manager, and I know what’s going on.” What about Britney’s quotes saying she’s spending New Year’s Eve with Sandip? “Sandip is here in Mumbai, how can he be spending New Year’s Eve with her?” Jessy asked.

She said that the media has often circulated stories about Sandip that aren’t true, and that it’s getting out of hand now. The last big news, of them performing at Madonna’s birthday bash – is that also inaccurate? “Yes, it is inaccurate. First, we played along thinking, whatever, but then it became too much – Julia Roberts commenting on my beauty and etc, and now, the papers say that Britney met Sandip at Madonna’s birthday party. How can that be? I never met Julia. We were very much in town (Mumbai),” she replied. “Now, it’s being said that Sandip laughed about it (the affair with Britney) and making it out like that Sandip’s dating Britney, which is not true... I’ve been in touch with Sandip throughout his two-day stay in Jodhpur, and he said there are things appearing in the media and do not believe it.” How come neither she nor Sandip ever spoke up about these reports earlier, if they were false? “See for us, it’s just publicity, just hype. Write it. But it’s getting it out of hand now,” she replied. “Sandip has denied that there’s any love angle and she’s come here only for work... I don’t know what’s going on, Sandip says he does not know what’s going on, and we’re not clear who’s doing this.” But why would someone cook up complimentary stories about them, we asked her. “All these women who’re coming here, they want some media attention, and they want something to be talked about after they leave. It’s good for their work also,” she replied. Does Britney need a Soparrkar link-up to stay in the news? “No... but maybe she wants a little more push in India?” she said uncertainly. “I don’t think it’s Sandip who’s actually doing this. This is being done by the same people who spread the London story... Maybe Madonna is too impressed with him...” So Madonna fed a positive story about Sandip Soparrkar, and Britney Spears fed another? “He must have just played along with the story, because it came internationally...” she said. “People who are crazy about being in the media, they can lie to you sometimes. But he doesn’t have the power, if you’re blaming him... the whole country’s writing about him, isn’t it?”

    Larry wanted to fuel rumours’

Sandip strenuously denies having anything romantic to do with Britney. But then, who’s spreading these stories and sending fabricated pictures? “Larry Rudolph – he is Britney’s manager, and he had come with her when she travelled here for the weekend, and he said he had issues with his laptop and his internet connection was not working very well, so if he could mail it from my ID, so I said he could. And when he was working on my comp, I wasn’t there, so I don’t know what he sent,” said Sandip. How can he disown accountability for something sent from his laptop, his ID, and not even see what was being sent? “He being the spokesperson and manager for her, I don’t know what he sent. He’s kind of rude, so I didn’t converse much with him.” Sandip knew nothing of it at all? “Larry had said he wanted to fuel certain things about Britney and get promotion for the video which will soon be released in Asia and Australia. So I told him if you want to use something to fuel, it’s okay, it’s fine with me, not a problem, but if it’s going to get a little too much, I don’t want my life to get affected with it, you know,” replied Sandip. When we mentioned the doctored picture, he said, “He’s not even shown me what pictures he has.” What about them “locking themselves up” for an hour, like ‘Larry’ is suggesting? “We did, but for rehearsal,” Sandip replied.

Did he go to Madonna’s birthday bash? “Yes, but we are not supposed to talk about it in public.” He and Jessy both went? “Yes, we both danced there together.”

What would he say if Jessy were to include the England visit in the list of ‘fake’ things that the media’s writing? “That she’s saying because we’re not supposed to talk about it.” If a channel asks you tomorrow on live TV, are you dating Britney, will you say you are? “No, I will say I’m dating Jessy... I have laughed (when asked about it earlier) because it’s really funny, and I have said I’m meeting her for work. Larry, being her spokesperson, has maybe added his two bits to it.”

Alright, then, when did Britney come to India, and when did she leave? “She came late Friday night... Saturday morning. She left this morning (on December 29) at about 2-2.30 am.” Where were they staying? “Umaid Bhawan.” She came by chartered flight? “Yes.” Directly to and from Jodhpur? “I assume so, I don’t know, I didn’t ask questions about that,” is what Sandip had to say.Source URL: http://pokbongkoh.blogspot.com/2008/

You could party with a rock star on New Year's Eve

LOS ANGELES – Why not share a shot with Paris Hilton or boogie down with Pete Wentz to ring in 2009? This year, any regular Joe with dough (and no reason to sweat the economy) could party like — and with — a rock star, movie star or reality TV star on New Year's Eve.

Here's a look at some of the parties that were boasting famous names:

    • Paris Hilton was to host the Bongo Virus party at the Trademark nightclub in Sydney, Australia. Tickets were $129.

New York City's biggest party was arguably the annual ball drop in Times Square. This year's celebration was to feature performances by Lionel Richie, Taylor Swift and the Jonas Brothers, along with appearances by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and former President Bill Clinton. Admission was free. Meanwhile, Mario Lopez was to host a party at the Marquee nightclub (tickets: $165) and actress Emmanuelle Chriqui and blogger Perez Hilton were to host a party at Hotel Gansevoort (admission: $200).

Lindsay Lohan was to helm the festivities as gal pal Samantha Ronson spun the tunes at Mansion nightclub in Miami. Admission was $200. Also in Miami: John Legend was to appear at Prive (tickets: $200); T.I. was to perform and Chloe Sevigny was to host at Gansevoort South (admission started at $225); Diddy, Molly Sims, Adam Levine and James Valentine of Maroon 5 were to appear at separate parties at Fontainebleau (admission: $400 for each event); and Busta Rhymes was to perform at the Shore Club (tickets started at $275).

    • How much was it to party with a star in Las Vegas? That depends on your definition of a star. You could celebrate the New Year with new parents Ashlee Simpson- Wentz and Pete Wentz at Pure nightclub for $200; share a toast with Kim Kardashian and her sisters at LAX for $150; or raise a glass with Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt at the Christian Audigier nightclub for $125. Also in Vegas: Usher was to appear at the Bank nightclub inside the Bellagio (tickets: $200), and Denise Richards and Lance Bass were to host as Run DMC provided the beats at Prive nightclub inside the Planet Hollywood hotel (admission: $200).

    • Just months after surviving a fiery plane crash, Travis Barker and DJ AM (Adam Goldstein) were set to usher in the New Year at the Wilshire Theater in Los Angeles. Tickets were $90. Their performance was to be broadcast live online and at nine nightclubs around the country as part of the New Year's Nation multicity celebration. Also in Los Angeles: Eva Longoria was to host a soiree at her restaurant, Beso; Robin Thicke was to perform at Area (admission: $150); Katy Perry was to perform at Paramount Studios (tickets started at $100); Xzibit was to perform at Apple Lounge (tickets started at $150); Moby, Paul Oakenfold and other DJs were to spin under circus-style tents downtown at Giant Maximus (tickets started at $70)Source URL: http://pokbongkoh.blogspot.com/2008/

Foreign-language Oscar a magnet for controversy

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Pity the foreign-language committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. No group works as hard watching so many difficult films. And yet no group takes as much grief for its choices.

That's what happens when the normal discontentment about Oscar choices goes global. The complaining can get loud.

This year, the rules for the foreign-language category again have been tweaked to limit oversights, and committee leaders generally are trying to learn from past flare-ups. No language controversies, the Academy hopes, a la the one over Israel's "The Band's Visit" last year. No debates over whether a submission actually comes from a bona fide country, like the flap over Palestinian entry "Divine Intervention" in 2002. No snubs of difficult material, like Romania's abortion-focused "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days" last year. This year, it's going to be different.

But given the history of this difficult category -- voters, after all, have to compare dozens of divergent films and film cultures -- should we really be surprised if the announcement of the shortlist of nine next month brings more hand-wringing?

First, a quick history. After years of getting tarred with the tag of predictability, the foreign-language committee two years ago overhauled its system. Instead of having several hundred members choose five nominees, that group could now name nine. A separate body of 30 members would then be convened to narrow the list to five nominees. The premise was that by allowing nearly twice as many films on the shortlist, there'd be fewer possibilities for an oversight.

That seemed like a good idea -- until last year, when such edgier films as "4 Months" and France's "Persepolis" were excluded from the nine by the seemingly conservative voting committee. It turns out that giving a group more nominee slots doesn't change their sensibility; it just gives them more chances to make head-scratching choices.

So this year, the executive committee of the foreign-language committee -- yes, the bureaucratic names can be more impenetrable than a Fassbinder film -- is taking back some of the power it delegated. It's allowing the larger group to choose only six of the nine. Then the executive committee is coming in and choosing three films of its own.

"Historically, the general committee has a particular kind of member that may overlook something formally or thematically new or different or challenging. And though I don't love the word, I think we might be able to correct that a little," says Mark Johnson, chairman of the Academy's foreign-language film committee.

The foreign-language group is like a constant gardener: It's always pruning, hoping the field looks better today than it did yesterday. And in many ways, it does. The lists of five nominees now, as a rule, contain fewer gaffes or serious omissions, even as the Academy must cope with a mindblowingly large pool of films thanks to burgeoning film regions including Eastern Europe and Latin America.

But this year's rule changes, while solving one problem, open the door to another.

If the executive committee's three slots are meant as a corrective, might it be tempted to use that power for reasons of politics instead of substance? Let's say the initial group doesn't choose "The Class." French filmmaker Laurent Cantet's picture is, undeniably, a great film and should be nominated. But will the executive committee feel pressure to choose it simply because it would be too embarrassing to omit a Palme d'Or winner? What happens, then, in a year when a more questionable Palme choice is made?

There's another long-standing problem that the new rules don't address: Unlike the Globes, the Oscars use a "one country, one submission" procedure. The system is designed to manage the overall number of films (a record 67 were submitted this year) while giving every country an ostensibly equal shot at the prize.

That's all well and good. The problem, though, is that it means worthy candidates are overlooked even before the Academy gets a chance to weigh in. Last year, France had to decide between "Persepolis" and "La Vie en Rose"; this year, Gauls had to pick among "The Class" and the equally worthy "A Christmas Tale" and "I've Loved You So Long." Filmmakers like Pedro Almodovar have been snubbed by their country. One film per country means some of the best movies are eliminated right off the bat.

The Academy leadership acknowledges the problem but says there isn't much it can do; it doesn't want to wade into the politics of each country by choosing for it, and it can't throw open the doors to multiple submissions because it can't reasonably be expected to consider hundreds of films.

But why not do something else? Why not allow a country to claim a wild card, say, once every five years? If France feels it has a particularly strong year -- or, for that matter, if the Academy does -- it could use the card to get two French films in that year. This way, the number of films stays manageable but a great film isn't excluded simply because it shares a homeland with another strong title.

This year, there's the usual deep stable of buzz candidates. "Waltz With Bashir," "Everlasting Moments," "The Class" and "Gomorrah" -- from Israel, Sweden, France and Italy, respectively -- all hold pole positions at the moment. And Norway's "O'Horten," Jordan's "Captain Abu Raed," Russia's "Mermaid," Turkey's "Three Monkeys," South Africa's "Jerusalema" and Colombia's "Dog Eat Dog" all have received attention for good reason. Lately, Kazakhstan's "Tulpan" has come on the scene as a dark horse after winning some fest awards. And don't rule out Germany's Golden Globe nominee "The Baader Meinhof Complex," which has drawn headlines because of its controversial subject.

That list alone comes to 12 films. That means at least one-quarter of these contenders will be left off the shortlist, which in turns means we can get ready for more second-guessing.

It wouldn't be the foreign-language Oscar race without it.

Tina Fey voted AP Entertainer of the Year

NEW YORK – Tina Fey is the entertainer of the year? You betcha.

Fey was voted The Associated Press' Entertainer of the Year, an annual honor chosen by newspaper editors and broadcast producers across the country. Fey was selected by AP members as the performer who had the greatest impact on culture and entertainment in 2008.

The 38-year-old comedian bested runner-up Robert Downey Jr., whose comeback was capped with the blockbuster smash "Iron Man," and the third-place vote-getter, Heath Ledger, who posthumously wowed audiences as the Joker in "The Dark Knight."

But it was Fey who most impressed voters largely with her indelible impression of Gov. Sarah Palin on "Saturday Night Live." Her cameos on her old show (where she had been a head writer until 2006) helped drive the show to record ratings and eventually drew an appearance from Palin herself.

"Tina Fey is such an obvious choice," said Sharon Eberson, entertainment editor of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "She gave us funny when we really needed it and, in a year when women in politics were making huge strides, Fey stood out in the world of entertainment."

    Fey's 2008 was a full year, though.

She also starred for the first time on the big screen in "Baby Mama" (which grossed $60 million at the box office) and won three Emmys for her critically lauded NBC sitcom "30 Rock," which she created, stars in and writes. In the comedy series category, she won for best lead actress and best writing, and shared in the award for best comedy series.

"She simultaneously entertained us with her wit and put a mirror up to the nation during the election and made us think about what was going on," said Scott Shive, assistant features editor at the Lexington Herald-Leader. "She is the epitome of the smart kid coming out on top for once."

As soon as Palin was chosen as Sen. John McCain's running mate, conjecture mounted that the similar-looking Fey would have to return to "SNL" to play her.

In an interview earlier this fall, Fey recalled watching early TV coverage of Palin: "That was the first time I thought, `Well, I kinda do look like her. I'd better really listen to how this lady talks.'"

Fey debuted the impression on the "SNL" season premiere and a sensation quickly followed. She made four more pre-election appearances as Palin on the late-night satire.

"From the winks to the nods to the accent, she nailed it," said Marc Bona, assistant entertainment editor of the Plain Dealer in Cleveland. "And she did so at a time when it seemed the whole country was tuned in — both to the presidential race as well as 'Saturday Night Live.'"

Her Palin impression has benefited "30 Rock," too. The show premiered its fourth season to 8.5 million viewers, a million more than last year's opener.

Recently, she was also nominated for a Golden Globe (for best performance by an actress in a TV series, comedy or musical), as well as a Screen Actors Guild award.

"The `SNL' stuff has certainly changed things for me," Fey said in October. "A lot more people seem to know who I am."

Last year's AP Entertainer of the Year also went to a comedian whose satire blended in with politics: Stephen Colbert.

Angelina, who raises six kids with Pitt, is reportedly keen to wed the actor, reports the China Daily. However, Pitt feels it’s too early to take the relationship to the next level and wants to consult counselors before tying the knot.

"Angelina proposed to Brad recently and suggested a Christmas wedding. When Brad insisted they hold off, Angelina put him on a major guilt trip by telling him the kids want them to be married," a source told National Enquirer magazine. “Brad thinks a wedding right now is biting off more than they can chew. He would like to slow down and go through some couples counseling,” the source added.

But Angelina is insisting they get married before they adopt again or have another biological baby," the source added. Meanwhile, the 33-year-old actress is said to be undergoing fertility treatments in order to conceive a second set of biological twins with Brad, 45.

"Angelina's doctors told her she has a strong chance of conceiving twins if she does it within two years after having her first pair. She has been seeing a fertility doctor regularly. She and Brad are monitoring when she is fertile. And they are trying really hard in the bedroom," a source said. Source URL: http://pokbongkoh.blogspot.com/2008/

Los Angeles (E! Online) – Not too shy to bare her bikini-ready bod, Lisa Rinna is apparently only gearing up for an even more revealing day in the sun.

The TV Guide Network correspondent and former Dancing With the Stars contestant has more or less confirmed rumors—well, she's certainly not doing anything to squelch them—that she's planning to pose nude for Playboy.

"I'm the worst liar on the planet, I can't lie, so...I think that could be a yes," she told Extra recently when asked about the possibility.

Not that this will be a new experience for the 45-year-old mother of two.

Rinna also took it all off for the House that Hef Built when she was Demi-on-the-cover-of-Vanity-Fair-pregnant with her and Harry Hamlin's now 10-year-old daughter, Delilah Belle, in 1998.

LONDON – It's a whodunit for the info age.

The animators behind Wallace & Gromit say they have quashed a pirated recording of a Christmas special leaked on YouTube.

But Aardman Animations, based in Bristol, England, said Thursday it had "no idea" how the material slipped out.

Three clips from "A Matter of Loaf and Death," were uploaded to the video-sharing site on Sunday. The special is scheduled to air on BBC television on Christmas Day.

The hugely popular clay animated series stars the cheese-loving, hare-brained inventor Wallace and his long-suffering pooch, Gromit.

A few audiences have seen preview screenings.

The YouTube version featured poor sound and may have been recorded using a video camera or mobile phone.

Landmark Franco statue taken down in Spain

Landmark Franco statue taken down in Spain AFP – A crane dismantles the last Spanish dictator Francisco Franco's equestrian statue in the northern …

SANTANDER, Spain (AFP) – One of the last remaining public statues of the late Spanish dictator Francisco Franco was taken down from the centre of the northern city of Santander on Thursday, 33 years after his death.

The seven-foot (2.1-metre) bronze statue, which depicts the general on horseback in his commander-in-chief uniform, was inaugurated in 1964 and was one of a host of similar statues erected at the time in other Spanish cities.

Santander city hall decided to remove the statue in 2004 as part of plan to redevelopment plan for the central square but it has taken four years for the work to begin.

Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's government passed a law in 2007 which requires that all statues, plaques and other symbols of Franco's dictatorship be removed from public buildings.

The statue in Santander was the most prominent of the handful of statues that had still to be taken down.

The authorities in Madrid removed a similar statue in 2005 from a square in the Spanish capital in the middle of the night.

The next day some 700 Franco supporters protested at the site of the dismantled statue while the conservative opposition Popular Party accused the of needlessly reviving the wounds of the past.

him at a Los Angeles event.

The hotel heiress, who split from Benji in November, is reportedly keen to patch up with him and made a beeline for him as soon as she heard he was coming at the event.

“Paris was doing interviews on the red carpet when Benji arrived. He stopped to greet her in mid-interview and the two went inside the store together, where she quickly pulled him into a private corner so they could talk,” the Sun quoted a source said.

“Paris waved off photographers as the former couple chatted cozily together. After grabbing drinks at the bar, Paris quickly approached Nicole Richie, who was there with her boyfriend, Benji’s twin Joel, to say hi, and then she and Benji headed out to the smoking patio for some more quiet conversation, When someone asked Paris if she was getting back together with Benji, she reportedly “offered a knowing smile,” the source added.

Just two weeks ago, Paris had hinted that the two might rekindle their romance.

“I love Benji. He's such an amazing man and he's my best friend and he's been so great to me and so loyal,” Paris said.
“We''ll always be very close. We''ll see what happens in the future. I''m still in love with him,” she added.

Carving out the spirit of Liberation War

Syed Abdullah Khalid is regarded as one of the most brilliant sculptors of our country. A multitalented artist, Khalid has not excelled in sculpture but also made an impression with his paintings.

Khalid's “Aparajeyo Bangla” on Dhaka University campus has become an evocative icon on the Liberation War. The sculpture is a reflection of the Bengali consciousness and indomitable yearning for freedom. The project was launched in 1973 when this artist was a young teacher at the Department of Fine Arts, Chittagong University. Throughout the making of the sculpture, Khalid had to face religious anarchism and negative reaction from the bigots.

Nevertheless Khalid -- high on patriotism -- was determined to finish the work of art.

“I think struggle is one of the most remarkable traits of human nature. The rewards we get without struggles are paled when compared to achievements accomplished through physical and psychological labours,” said Khalid.

Hasina Ahmed, Syed Hamid Moksood and Badrul Alam Benu, who are very close to Khalid, modelled for "Aparajeyo Bangla." The artist closely observed the models' personalities and his close association with them enabled him to do justice with his portrayal. On August 15, 1975, the work suddenly came to a halt because of the heinous murder of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Political instability and the arrest of the then Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University, Abdul Matin Chowdhury, also disrupted the work.

The project remained incomplete till the end of 1978. Some fundamentalist groups tried to demolish the sculpture in 1977. However, the brave students of Dhaka University fiercely guarded the work. After a long hiatus, the work began once more in the beginning of 1979 -- with a new vision and dream. At last the project was finished on December 16, 1979. The sculpture was inaugurated by wounded freedom fighters.

“There are monuments recognised and commissioned by the government, and then there are those made by the people. 'Aparajeyo Bangla' falls in the latter category. I undertook the project for my own gratification. I wanted to do doing something for my country and fellow citizens. After the Liberation War, I contemplated a plan to create a symbol which would inspire generations of Bangladeshis,” asserted Khalid.

Losing himself in nature, Khalid takes themes from this infinite source and plays with colours on the canvas. He likes to experiment with different forms and adores breaking and constructing them in many ways. In many of Khalid's works, one finds a great interchange between abstract and realistic forms. Works of Mustafa Monwar, Rashid Choudhury, Quamrul Hasan and Zainul Abedin inspire Khalid.

Today Khalid has become the model of an ideal artist. Unfortunately he has received no assistance from the government or any organisation. However, the artist has no complaint. Imagination, love for nature and motherland continue to drive his artistic endeavours.

Another war around corner, 37 years after

Call to boycott war criminals through ballots gets louder

Just before the surrender of the Pakistani forces on Dec 16, 1971, a skirmish breaks out between them and freedom fighters near the then Hotel Intercontinental in Dhaka. They surrendered after a brief encounter. Two paper cuttings (Bangladesh Observer and daily Azad) show reports on seeking information about Al-Badr activists and the ban imposed on five anti-liberation parties. Photo: Star File Photo

The government of independent Bangladesh in its first decision banned five communal outfits including Jamaat-e-Islami, which not only opposed the nation's independence but also actively helped Pakistani occupation forces commit genocide and other war crimes.

Thirty-seven years into independence, those who won freedom of Bangladesh through a nine-month bloody war are waging another fight against the defeated anti-liberation forces in a battle of vote.

The leading veterans including the living commanders of the Liberation War have launched a unified battle to wake up people once again to stand against Jamaat and alleged war criminals contesting the national polls.

Prior to the celebration of Victory Day today, the sector commanders and other Liberation War forces have already identified 14 candidates as war criminals in the BNP-Jamaat alliance.

The banned parties including Jamaat were given the green light to do politics during the rule of late president Ziaur Rahman after the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975.

After victory on December 16, 1971 the first issue of newspapers of the new nation carried the government's decision to ban five communal parties on December 18.

The Morning News run the report reading, "The government of the peoples' republic of Bangla Desh has banned four communal parties with immediate effect. These four political parties are Muslim League and all its factions, Pakistan Democratic Party, Nezam-e-Islam and Jamat-e-Islami. In addition to these the government has also banned the Pakistan People's Party. The announcement was made by the Bangla Desh government in a radio broadcast."

The Liberation War forces are waging the fight against Jamaat and war criminals as the long-standing demand to restrict participation of war criminals in the polls has failed.

A ray of hope, however, shimmers in the dark as the Election Commission for the first time decided to debar war criminals from polls and included a provision in the Representation of People (Amendment) Ordinance, 2008.

The provision states: "A person shall be disqualified for election as or for being, a member, if he has been convicted as war criminal by any national or international court or tribunal."

But the move to debar war criminals from polls falls flat on its face as the government has not initiated a move to officially identify them.

Former army chief Lt Gen (retd) M Harun-ur-Rashid told The Daily Star: "The government has neither initiated any move to identify war criminals nor even informed the Election Commission about them though the government has many old records and documents in this regard."

"The Liberation War ministry could have done the job on behalf of the government," added Harun, also coordinator of the Sector Commanders' Forum, which would launch a campaign soon in the constituencies of candidates belonging to anti-liberation forces.

Besides conducting door-to-door campaign against war criminals, they will also publish posters and leaflets making voters aware why these elements should not be elected.

The leaflets and posters will feature credentials and roles of the respective war criminal candidates during the Liberation War.

Committees to resist these elements will also be formed in those constituencies in addition to carrying out regular rallies and processions to be attended by the sector commanders and freedom fighters.

Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, a forum for secular Bangladesh and trial of war criminals, will carry out simultaneous campaigns.

Acting president of the forum Shahriar Kabir told The Daily Star: "We ran such campaigns ahead of polls in 1996 and 2001 with the slogan 'We want Razakar-free parliament'. We also distributed posters, leaflets and pamphlets containing credentials of war criminals in their respective constituencies during those campaigns."

Meanwhile, the Qur'an Sunnah Research Institute, Jhikargachaa, Jessore, and Sachetan Nagorik Samaj have already published posters and leaflets against Jamaat this time.

The publication contains some statements of Jamaat founder Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi that appear contradictory to Islam.

"Had we got expected response from the political parties regarding our appeal of debarring war criminals from polls, the fight need not be launched," Gen Harun said.

When the Sector Commanders' Forum moved to hold a dialogue with political parties with the appeal, BNP did not response. The party rather formed an alliance with anti-liberation force Jamaat.

Even Jamaat was not supposed to get registration with EC but allowed the registration to bring all parties in polls.

Just six days ahead of victory in 1971, incumbent Jamaat Secretary General Ali Hasan Mohammad Mojaheed, who was then president of its student wing Islami Chhatra Shangha, was active to foil the Liberation War.

Mojaheed addressed a rally organised by Al Badr on December 10.

The Daily Azad covered the rally and reported on December 11: "President of East Pakistan Islami Chhatra Shangha Al Mujaheed urged people to deal a deathblow to expansionism of Hindustan. He said, "We cannot accept existence of Hindustan. It has become an indispensable task to eliminate Hindustan for the sake of ensuring security to Pakistan."

Nude 'Virgin Mary' on Playboy

A nude model resembling the Virgin Mary on the cover of the Mexican edition of Playboy magazine, published only days before a major Mexican festival dedicated to the mother of Jesus, prompted the company's U.S. headquarters on Friday to apologize.

The magazine, which hit newsstands on December 1 as ceremonies began leading to Friday's pilgrimage to the Mexico City shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe, showed a model wearing nothing but a white cloth over her head and breasts.

She is standing in front of a stained glass window with the cover line, "We Love You, Maria" in Spanish. The model's name is Maria Florencia Onori.

The Virgin of Guadalupe, said to have appeared to a sixteenth century Indian peasant, is Mexico's most revered Roman Catholic figure and the annual pilgrimage to the Mexico City basilica dedicated to her is one of the world's largest religious events.

In a statement, Chicago-based Playboy Enterprises Inc said the Mexican edition of the magazine is published by a licensee, and the company did not approve or endorse the cover.

"While Playboy Mexico never meant for the cover or images to offend anyone, we recognize that it has created offense, and we as well as Playboy Mexico offer our sincerest apologies," the statement said.

Raul Sayrols, publisher of Playboy Mexico, said in a statement, "The image is not and never was intended to portray the Virgin of Guadalupe or any other religious figure. The intent was to reflect a Renaissance-like mood on the cover."

Playboy Mexico printed 100,000 copies of the issue.Source URL: http://pokbongkoh.blogspot.com/2008/
