Audiences heart 'Paul Blart'

In this image released by Sony Pictures, Kevin James is shown in the comedy, AP – In this image released by Sony Pictures, Kevin James is shown in the comedy, 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop.' …

LOS ANGELES – Much like its goofy titular character, "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" has defied expectations. The slapstick comedy, which cost a mere $26 million to produce, is speeding toward the $100 million mark following back-to-back weekends atop the box office.

Could this surprise success signal the arrival of Kevin James in Hollywood's stable of bankable leading comedic actors?

For nine seasons, James served as the lovable master of ceremonies on the CBS sitcom "The King of Queens." Now, audiences have been filling movie theaters to see 43-year-old James as Paul Blart, a hypoglycemic single father who takes his security-guard job at the West Orange Pavilion Mall in New Jersey way too seriously.

"I think it had so much heart," said the movie's casting director, Jeanne McCarthy, who also worked on "Forgetting Sarah Marshall. "I think Kevin James totally has achieved leading-man status. When he was on 'King of Queens,' I would watch a 'King of Queens' episode over anything else — even when it was syndicated."

Jeff Sussman, James' longtime manager, said he was not surprised at his client's recent box office boom. Sussman said James has always been deliberately cautious about making the leap from television to film — first teaming with Will Smith in 2005's "Hitch" and then with Adam Sandler in 2007's "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry."

But James, previously untested as a leading man, has proven he can command a movie with "Paul Blart."

James is fielding several projects, including one in development that's poised to capitalize on a clearly winning formula: "Zookeeper," which will again feature him as a uniformed leading man. He also plans to co-star in another movie with Sandler, whose Happy Madison Productions helped produce "Paul Blart."

To be sure, exactly what's been drawing audiences to James' first lead role could have nothing to do with James. It's not as if moviegoers were overwhelmed with fresh choices in mid-January, typically a dumping ground for studios; and the theory goes that lighter fare plays best in downbeat times.

Whatever the reason, there's at least one group that doesn't heart "Paul Blart": real security guards. For starters, they say the phrase "mall cop" is nearly as demeaning as the dreaded "rent-a-cop" moniker.

"I think it reinforces a stereotype the security industry has been working on dispelling for years," said Bob Zalud, editor of Security magazine. "These good folks are trained rather well, in terms of hours accumulated. It would seem, in some ways, we're still fighting a perception that they are less than fully trained or just adequate at their jobs."

Bud Bradley, operations vice president of AlliedBarton Security Services, which provides security services across the country to — among other places — retail malls, said he was concerned about the portrayal of mall security officers as wannabe cops in "Paul Blart," but he acknowledged he thought the movie was funny — although not very realistic.

"Our challenges with security officers is making sure they perform up to expectations and their level of authority," said Bradley. "In the movie, Paul Blart takes on a role where he gets involved in a criminal matter. At that point, our officers would know to stand down, step back and allow the law enforcement to take over."

James himself said he hopes children learn to appreciate the Paul Blarts of the world from the PG-rated film.

"I hope they respect mall cops, is what I hope, really," James said while promoting the movie. "You know, what I've experienced and I see is that they just get abused, these mall police officers. I can't even call them police officers because they're not real police. That's their job, when the going gets tough, to call the real police."

Indiana student ill, but wins Miss America crown

Miss Indiana Katie Stam competes in the evening gown competition portion of Miss AP – Miss Indiana Katie Stam competes in the evening gown competition portion of Miss America 2009 in Las …

LAS VEGAS – Katie Stam of Indiana was crowned Miss America on Saturday night, fighting off a throat infection, laryngitis and 51 other contestants to win the 88-year-old pageant.

The 22-year-old University of Indianapolis student became the first Miss America winner from the Hoosier State. She drew loud applause for her rendition of "Via Dolorosa" during the talent portion of the beauty pageant at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

Stam said she had trouble sleeping one night this week while she took prescription medicine to fight the infection, but got her voice back by Thursday.

"I was feeling like myself again — I will never take my health for granted," she said.

The Seymour native also strutted onstage in a black bikini and an off-the-shoulder, white lace evening gown. During the interview portion of the competition she decried the use of performance-enhancing drugs among professional athletes and discussed the definition of glamour.

"That beauty that you feel on the inside, it's that confidence, that radiance inside of you, that's what glamour is," Stam said.

Stam won a $50,000 scholarship and hopes to obtain a bachelor's degree in communications and become a television news anchor. She began competing in pageants at age 15.

Stam was crowned by reigning Miss America Kirsten Haglund of Michigan and will soon embark on a year of travel and public appearances.

She said she had one semester left in school — but didn't know when she would finish — and already was graduating debt-free without the $50,000 prize. Stam said she might use the money for graduate school.

The first runner-up was Miss Georgia Chasity Hardman, who took home a $25,000 scholarship.

The 52 young women took to the stage in blue jeans, bikinis and ballgowns following a mini-reality series on pageant prep work and a week of preliminary competition.

After an opening dance number and the traditional parade of states, judges and fans immediately trimmed the field to 15 finalists. Five more were trimmed based on swimsuit and evening gown competitions, while the remaining 10 went on to showcase their dancing, singing and other skills during the talent portion.

"This gown nearly blinds people," Miss Arkansas Ashlen Batson said in a video clip played as she walked onstage in a silver dress with beading. Batson was eliminated before she could play her flute in the talent competition.

Miss Hawaii Nicole Fox drew cheers as she performed a traditional Tahitian dance, wearing a huge white feathered headdress and skirt to match. After she exited, part of her skirt remained on the stage.

In a new twist, viewers of a lead-in reality show, "Miss America: Countdown to the Crown" voted in four of the 15 finalists, while the judges announced the other 11 during a live TLC television broadcast.

The four finalists chosen by viewers were Stam, the eventual winner, and Hardman, the first runner-up, as well as Miss South Dakota Alexandra Hoffman and Miss Alabama Amanda Tapley.

The other 11 women remaining after the opening number were: Batson, Fox, Miss Michigan Ashlee Baracy, Miss Delaware Galen Giaccone, Miss District of Columbia Kate Marie Grinold, Miss Iowa Olivia Myers, Miss New York Leigh-Taylor Smith, Miss California Jackie Geist, Miss Florida Sierra Minott, Miss Kentucky Emily Cox and Miss Tennessee Ellen Carrington.

The viewer interaction to name four contestants as "America's choice" was Discovery-owned TLC's attempt to stoke interest in this year's contestants. Once an American icon, the shine on Miss America's crown has been dimmed by slipping ratings and the popularity of more salacious reality shows.

The pageant was dropped from network television after the 2004 pageant drew a record low viewership. It found a home in Las Vegas after moving from its longtime location in Atlantic City, N.J., but it has struggled to get its footing on cable.

In its second year on TLC, Mario Lopez, of "Extra," hosted with an assist from Clinton Kelly of TLC's "What Not to Wear." Judges include actress Laura Bell Bundy, Miss America 1999 Nicole Johnson, hairstylist Ken Paves and Olympic swimmer Cullen Jones.

As always, the women competed in swimsuit, evening gown and talent competitions, as well as a short "interview," in which they were asked their thoughts on a current event or hot topic. TLC has tried to dash the days of answers that declared that "children are the future." Questions came from average people and were intended to put the contestants on the spot.

TLC also had some fun with the cliches of pageants past. For example, in its scorecard for home viewers posted online, it asked viewers to count the number of mentions of world peace and to name the contestant with best spray tan.

Taj Mahal wows Julia Roberts

The actor before love's historic symbol.

Hollywood's Oscar-winning "Pretty Woman" Julia Roberts is wowed after a visit to the 17th century monument of love, the Taj Mahal, on Thursday.

Accompanied by her cameraman-husband Daniel Moder, the 41-year-old actress was awed by the Taj as she simply said "beautiful" as she gazed at the white marbled monument and had a close look at the structure for nearly half an hour, admiring the intricate designs and engravings in it.

Initially, the crowd at the Taj Mahal seemed to overlook her but when a handful of tourists recognised her, Roberts was flooded with requests to be photographed with them. However, she politely refused.

A few days before reaching Agra, Roberts, along with her family including two of her three children, visited India's Pink City, Jaipur and spent time at a luxury hotel on the outskirts of the capital city of the desert state of Rajasthan.

It was purely a private visit to India by the actress and her family and when in the hotel she did not want her privacy to be disturbed in any way, leaving instructions to hotel management to allow only senior managers to take care of their comforts.

Roberts shot into fame in early 1990s by acting in romantic comedy "Pretty Woman" opposite Richard Gere and won the Oscar for best actress in the year 2000 for her role in "Erin Brockovich".

She also starred in films like "Notting Hill" opposite Huge Grant, "Runaway Bride", again opposite Gere, and "My Best Friend's Wedding" which inspired Bollywood version "Aaj Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hain".

War and immigration mark foreign Oscar picks

“The Class,” which won the Palme d'Or for best picture at Cannes last year, portrays a Parisian middle school teacher's struggles to educate a class of mostly immigrant children.

Political themes weigh heavily in three films nominated last Thursday in the Oscars' foreign-language race, with the animated anti-war movie "Waltz with Bashir" in the running to win Israel's first Academy Award.

The film recounting Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon, coming as the Middle East was convulsed by war in the Gaza Strip, will compete with "The Class" from France, Germany's "The Baader Meinhof Complex," Japan's "Departures" and Austria's "Revanche."

"Waltz with Bashir," which mixes documentary filmmaking and animation, deals with Israel's incursion into Lebanon 26 years ago by revisiting director Ari Folman's memories of fighting in the conflict.

The film is widely considered the Oscar foreign-language front-runner after winning a Golden Globe earlier this month and being named the best movie of 2008 by the National Society of Film Critics in the United States.

The nod came one day after Israel withdrew the last of its troops from the Gaza Strip after a 22-day offensive against the Hamas group that controls the Palestinian territory.

"My film has a very strong anti-war declaration," Folman said, adding that he is among a minority of Israelis who oppose Israel's military assault to halt rocket attacks by Hamas.

"If you are a believer in non-violence like me, you ask yourself if everything is being done to prevent the next conflict, and in this case I think no," he said.

German director Uli Edel, 61, said he made "The Baader Meinhof Complex," about the 1970s German left-wing radical group, to teach his 20-something sons about the violent politics that engulfed his country's student movement when he was their age. Edel said he hoped the Oscar nomination would help the film gain exposure.

"The Class," which topped the competition at Cannes to win the Palme d'Or for best picture, portrays a Parisian middle school teacher's struggles to educate a class of mostly immigrant children.

Immigration is a hotly debated political issue in France, where conservative groups have criticised large-scale immigration from African and Muslim countries.

"For me, the only message I want to convey is that diversity, far from being a problem, is really a blessing for everybody," director Laurent Cantet said his movie.

The Japanese film "Departures" from director Yojiro Takita won the top prize at the Montreal World Film Festival. It centres on an unemployed man who takes a job preparing corpses for cremation and finds an aptitude for the intricate ritual.

"Revanche," from director Gotz Spielmann, is about an ex-convict who plans to help his girlfriend escape a brothel by robbing a bank but finds himself enmeshed with a policeman and his wife.

The Austrian movie follows last year's foreign-language Oscar win for Austria's Holocaust-era drama "The Counterfeiters."

Radiance, beauty and talent combined

Chaity crowned “Lux Channel i Super Star 2008”

“Lux Channel i Super Star 2008” Chaity (centre) flanked by 1st runner-up Syeda Ummey Tajzi (right) and 2nd runner-up Rebecca Sultana Deepa.

Amidst razzle dazzle the grand finale of "Lux Channel i Super Star 2008" was held at Bangladesh China Friendship Convention Centre on January 17.

The programme was broadcast live on Channel i. Marked by glamour and style, colourful performances and more, the beauty pageant/talent hunt was a huge success, and after gruelling months of grooming a new 'Super Star' was crowned.

The much-coveted crown went to Ishrat Jahan Chaity. She was crowned by the 2007 'Super Star' Bidya Sinha Saha Mim. Chaity is 19 and 5 feet 3 inches tall. She is currently doing her BBA under National University. Syeda Ummey Tajzi was named the 1st runner-up and Rebecca Sultana Deepa was announced the 2nd runner-up.

The event kicked off with a dance performance by the top eight contestants with a mellow rock number “Daana meley dao ekhoni” sung by Mila and composed by Fuad-al-Muqtadir. The performance was choreographed by Kabirul Islam Ratan. The song was written exclusively for the gala round by Chowdhury Fazle Shahid.

This was the fourth 'Super Star' hunt by Lux and Channel i. Launched on August 2008, the event gained huge response as thousands registered chasing the dream of instant stardom. A power point recap of the four month long journey was screened at the event.

Next was another dance performance by the top ten contestants. Dressed as budding butterflies, the contestants charmed the audience. Choreographed by Kabirul Islam Ratan, the piece had the song “Projapotita jokhon tokhon” in the background. The theme of this year's 'Super Star' was butterfly.

A dance performance with the title track of the movie “Amar Achhey Jol” was staged by Bidya Sinha Saha Mim. Mim received the lead role in the movie -- based on a novel by Humayun Ahmed -- as part of her winning prize in the 2007 contest. The song was recorded by Shaon and composed by S.I. Tutul.

A short play featuring the top ten followed. The play was written and directed by Tanvir Hossain Probal.

One of the most interesting segments was the Q&A session. The top five contestants were quizzed by the judges. Points earned in the round were based on instant answers and reactions of the contestants.

A duet by Sumon and Anila, “Gaibo na aar kono gaan” was a highlight of the show.

The winner was awarded a brand new Nissan Sunny along with a movie contract with Impress Telefilm Ltd. The first runner-up received a cash prize of Tk 5 lakh and the second runner up received Tk 3 lakh. Faridur Reza Sagar, managing director of Channel i and Impress Telefilm Ltd; Naushad Chowdhury, brands and development director, Unilever Bangladesh Ltd and Rakesh Mohan, chairman and managing director of Unilever Bangladesh Ltd, handed over the prizes.

Rest of the top ten contestants each received a cash prize of Tk 1 lakh.

“Lux Soft Glowing Skin Award” went to Taskin. Sara Zaker handed over the award.

Scores were based on performances on the stage, catwalk, Q&A session and SMS votes.

The event was judged by renowned actor and MP Kabori, noted novelist Emdadul Haque Milon and theatre/TV actor Afsana Mimi. Media personality Aly Zaker and agricultural activist Shykh Seraj were present as guest judges.

Radio Foorti was the radio partner and bangladeshinfo.com was the web partner of the programme.

The 24-year-old Lost In Translation star made it big in Hollywood with 1998 movie The Horse Whisperer and since then has not looked back.

The pretty lady says right from the beginning she knew she would star in films and credits hard work with helping her achieve her life-long ambition, reports the Daily Express.

She tells Moviehole.net , "I wanted to make movies since I was three years old, so I guess my perspective on it is that I was more than surprised by success.”

"I feel incredibly lucky to have had success, because I'd seen and I know so many talented people that never get the opportunity. But I am a believer that putting in the actual hours is kind of what makes a successful career and a lot of luck too, of course,” she added.

John Travolta Cancels Golden Globes Appearance

John Travolta Cancels Golden Globes Appearance E! Online – John Travolta Cancels Golden Globes Appearance(E! Online)

Los Angeles (E! Online) – John Travolta isn't ready for a golden moment just yet.

Rep Samantha Mast confirms to E! News that the actor will not be in attendance at Sunday's Golden Globes.

His appearance had been in doubt since the tragic Jan. 2 death of his 16-year-old son, Jett. The news is not entirely unexpected, considering Travolta and wife Kelly Preston held a memorial service Thursday for the young man and remain at their home in Ocala, Fla.

Travolta had been scheduled to appear in support of his latest movie, Bolt, which is nominated for Best Animated Feature, and Best Original Song for his duet with costar Miley Cyrus, "I Thought I Lost You."

Oscar Watch: First, the Golden Globes...

Oscar Watch: First, the Golden Globes... E! Online – Oscar Watch: First, the Golden Globes...(E! Online)

Los Angeles (E! Online) – Most-Out-in-Front Front-Runner: You don't need oddsmakers to tell you Heath Ledger is the pick to win at Sunday's Golden Globes. But if you're curious, check out Ladbrokes.com—the late Dark Knight star is listed as a prohibitive 1-12 favorite for Best Supporting Actor.

Longest of Longshots: According to Ladbrokes, Tropic Thunder cameo artist Tom Cruise has about as much chance of upsetting Ledger as The Reader does at ruining Slumdog Millionaire's happy ending. To be specific about it: That's a slim, 25-1 chance.

Reading the Writing in the Bookie Notepads: Cruise is not attending the Globes.

Tightest Race: Best Drama Actress, per BetUS.com, which has Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married), Meryl Streep (Doubt) and Kate Winslet (Revolutionary Road) in a dogfight. Who gets the edge?

Hathaway, who, if you asked the terribly British Brits at the Guardian, could use the acceptance-speech practice.

Don't Be Surprised If... You're not surprised by the other big Globe winners. Oddsmakers expect Sean Penn (Milk) and Penélope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) to do what they've done all award season: win.

Most Irrelevant Snubs: That The Dark Knight isn't up for Best Motion Picture, Drama and Christopher Nolan isn't up for Best Director on Sunday no longer matters. After snagging nominations this past week from Hollywood's top alphabet organizations (DGA, PGA, WGA), both are locks for top Oscar nominations.

Most Irrelevant Category: Best Motion Picture, Comedy. BetUs and Ladbrokes aren't even taking action on it. And, no, this does not bode well for In Bruges' Oscar dream, it was noted ironically.

Most Muddled Storyline: Fox News columnist Roger Friedman is calling on SAG voters to cast a Best Actress vote for Winslet for The Reader, a movie for which she's getting the Best Supporting Actress push, because he thinks she could win the Oscar for that role and not for Revolutionary Road, the movie for which she is getting the Best Actress push. Trying to clarifying things, New York Magazine declares the idea stupid.

Party like it's not 2008: Golden Globes return

The six presenters of the 65th annual Golden Globe awards sit onstage at the AP – The six presenters of the 65th annual Golden Globe awards sit onstage at the start of the show at at …

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – After Hollywood labor strife shut down last year's Golden Globes, organizers promised their show would be back, bigger and better than ever.

Fans will find out Sunday as the 66th annual Globes, the town's second-biggest movie celebration after the Academy Awards, return in their somewhat boozy glory.

A looser, more relaxed affair than the Oscars, the Globes are a televised dinner party where Hollywood's elite share a meal and drinks, sometimes cutting loose with unexpected antics (this is the place Jack Nicholson once mooned the crowd for a laugh).

The show could be punctuated with a solemn moment, though. Nearly a year after his death, Heath Ledger might be honored as best supporting actor for his frenzied performance as the Joker in the Batman blockbuster "The Dark Knight."

Other acting nominees include Angelina Jolie for "Changeling" and romantic partner Brad Pitt for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"; "Titanic" co-stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet for their reunion film, "Revolutionary Road"; Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. for "Tropic Thunder"; and Anne Hathaway for "Rachel Getting Married."

Winslet also has a nomination for "The Reader," while Meryl Streep is competing for two awards, dramatic actress with "Doubt" and musical or comedy actress with "Mamma Mia!"

"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "Doubt" and "Frost/Nixon" lead the field with five nominations each.

Last year's Globe show was scrapped after stars said they would stay away in honor of picket lines by the Writers Guild of America, which was engaged in a bitter strike against producers. In its place was a briskly paced news conference where winners were announced from a podium.

One of 2008's scheduled honorees finally will get his prize. Globe organizers had intended to present Steven Spielberg with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement, but the strike delayed it a year.

The Globes serve as a barometer for potential Oscar contenders, often singling out deserving newcomers who might have been overlooked among bigger-name stars. Relative unknown Hilary Swank won for dramatic actress at the Globes for 1999's "Boys Don't Cry," then went on to an upset win at the Oscars over Annette Bening, who had been considered the front-runner for "American Beauty."

Sunday's winners could get a last-minute boost for the Oscars, whose balloting closes the following day. Oscar nominations come out Jan. 22, with the awards following on Feb. 22.

The Globes are presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group of about 90 reporters covering show business for overseas outlets. The show airs live on NBC.

Week of odd names & insults

    Ann Coulter

We thought we'd seen it all. How wrong we were. This week, an unexpected dis raised eyebrows and ire, Lisa Bonet's unusual baby name rocked the Web, and a new toy that turns humans into Jedis had us one step closer to our childhood dream. Join us as we revisit these stories and more with the Buzz Log Week in Review.

    The Coulter Conspiracy?
The word "controversial" does not do Ann Coulter justice. Everything she says seems to set off a firestorm. So, when her scheduled appearance on NBC's Today Show was canceled at the last minute, some, including the right wing pundit, thought there might be a conspiracy in the works. Coulter certainly wasn't shy about her suspicion. The conservative commentator took the dis as an opportunity to wonder if she'd been "banned for life." Meanwhile, the peacock network defended its decision, saying there was no conspiracy. Fortunately, there was a happy ending. Coulter was invited back to the Today show the next day and engaged in some sparring with Matt "call me glib" Lauer.

Another Day, Another Unusual Baby Name
Bizarre baby names have become a cliché. Lisa Bonet either didn't get the memo or doesn't gave a darn. The former star of "The Cosby Show" gave birth to a healthy baby boy this week and, along with her husband, Jason Momoa, named the child "Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa." An article from Us Weekly explained that the unusual name is a tribute to the father's Hawaiian heritage. Nakoa means warrior and Manakauapo is a combination of mana (spirit/strength), kaua (rain), and po (dark). Considering the baby was born on a stormy night, the name actually makes a lot of sense. Searches on Ms. Bonet soared 542% this week and related lookups for "bonet baby name" and "lisa bonet pictures" also surged.

    On Becoming a Jedi
This one's for all you Star Wars nerds. USA Today reported on an upcoming toy that "will let you test and hone your Jedi-like abilities." What in the name of Jabba the Hutt does that mean? Well, according to the article, the Force Trainer "comes with a headset that uses brain waves to allow players to manipulate a sphere within a clear 10-inch-tall training tower." The wireless headset will read the person's brain activity "and the circuitry translates it to physical action." It sounds like something from "The Onion," but we assure it's the real deal. This fall, you can pretend to be Yoda for about $100.

    Also buzzing this week...
Joe the Plumber has a new job and it has nothing to do with septic tanks. The man who John McCain made famous for absolutely no reason is set to become a war reporter for the U.S. conservative website pjtv.com.
    • What are the new seven wonders of the world? That's what a new Internet poll is asking voters. Over a billion people are expected to choose between spectacular places like Loch Ness, Niagara Falls, Mount Everest, and many others. Voting ends July 7.
    • A tragic shooting in Oakland, California led to intense protests and violent demonstrations. Searches for the victim, Oscar Grant, surged tremendously.

Pitt cheated on Aniston, say experts

Experts say that having emotional feelings for someone is the start of an affair, but actor Brad Pitt, who was married to actress Jennifer

Aniston when he shot ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ with actress Angelina Jolie, has denied that he cheated on her.

Pitt, 45, has once again rebuffed allegations that he started his affair with Angelina on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith while he was still married to Jennifer, and says that he was still filming the movie when he split up with her.

“What people don't understand is that we filmed for a year. We were still filming after Jen and I split up,” the New York Daily News quoted him as telling W magazine. “Even then it doesn't mean that there was some kind of dastardly affair. There wasn't,” he added.

But experts have pointed out that an affair is not just about sex, but also about emotions. “An emotional affair is an affair. If you find yourself having feelings for someone, that is the beginning of an affair,” Rachel Sussman, a New York-based marriage and family therapist, said.

So, whether Pitt and Angelina consummated their relationship while he was still married to Jennifer is irrelevant, she says. Both Angelina and Pitt have denied that they began dating during his marriage and Pitt now says that his early relationship with Angelina was "respectful" of his marriage with Jennifer.

But Pitt's definition of what's “respectful” might differ from his ex-wife's. “Men do tend to walk around feeling that unless I'm having sex, I'm not doing anything wrong,” M Gary Neuman, psychotherapist and author of The Truth About Cheating: Why Men Stray and What You Can Do to Prevent It ,” said.

“Women can be uncomfortable with the husband talking about how many lunches he's had with an associate. There is a difference of perspective,” he said. Adding that extramarital sex “is only painful because it says how far the emotional affair went.”

Both Sussman and Neuman agree that spouses can avoid becoming too close to a member of the opposite sex. Source URL: http://pokbongkoh.blogspot.com/2009/01/

Paris Hilton on her sex life

Socialite heiress Paris Hilton claims she has had sex only with "a couple" of partners.

The announcement came contrary to the singer-actress' image as she is one of Hollywood's most notorious party girls and is rarely seen without a man on her arm.

In recent years, she has been on and off of various relationships like with model Jason Shaw and Greek shipping heir Paris Latsis, Backstreet Boy band member Nick Carter, film producer Rick Salomon and another Greek shipping heir, Stavros Niarchos III.

She was also in the news for ending her nine-month old relationship with Good Charlotte band rocker Benji Madden in November last year.

But, the socialite is adamant she has only ever slept with "a couple" of men, one of which was Salomon, who featured in her infamous X-rated home video, reports thesun.co.uk.

"I've only ever done it with a couple of people. People make up stories, but mostly I just kiss. I think it's important to play hard to get. If you give it up to a guy he won't respect you. He'll want you much more if he can't have you,” she said. Source URL: http://pokbongkoh.blogspot.com/2009/01/

Critics' final answer: `Slumdog' wins 5 awards

Freida Pinto backstage with the best picture award for AP – Freida Pinto backstage with the best picture award for 'Slumdog Millionaire' at the 14th Annual Critics' …

SANTA MONICA, Calif. – The critics have spoken, and "Slumdog Millionaire" is their final answer.

The rags-to-riches tale won a leading five prizes, including best picture, at Thursday night's Critics' Choice Awards. "Slumdog" also won honors for director Danny Boyle, writer Simon Beaufoy, star Dev Patel and composer A.R. Rahman.

"It's amazing to see how generous you've been to our film," said Boyle, who called the movie "a love song" to Mumbai.

"You're mad really," he continued backstage. "You're a bit like the Indians are mad about movies. When you find a movie you love, you go for it really."

"The Dark Knight" also won a pair of trophies: best action movie and best supporting actor for Heath Ledger. The crowd rose to its feet as the film's director, Christopher Nolan, accepted the award for Ledger.

"I can't presume to speak for him. His voice was as unique as it was original," said Nolan, adding that working with the actor "was one of the greatest experiences any of us ever had or will have."

"His contributions to cinema should be greatly appreciated," Nolan said, "so thanks for this appreciation."

Ledger died of an accidental drug overdose in January 2007.

Sean Penn was another double winner, earning best actor honors and sharing the acting-ensemble prize for "Milk."

A humble Penn said the real Harvey Milk would have been his first choice for the starring role.

"He had the charisma that an actor can only aspire to," Penn said.

Co-star Josh Brolin called Penn's turn as the groundbreaking gay politician "the most incredible performance ever."

Milk came into the contest with eight nominations. "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" also had eight nods, but didn't win a single award.

Kate Winslet was named best supporting actress for "The Reader," while Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep tied for best actress for "Rachel Getting Married" and "Doubt" respectively.

"Meryl is my idol," Hathaway said backstage. "To win with my idol who I was nominated against is amazing. I'm so thrilled for her and I'm very thrilled for myself, too."

Winslet and Streep weren't on hand to accept their awards, nor was Bruce Springsteen, who won best song for "The Wrestler," from the movie of the same name.

Director Darren Aronofsky accepted on the Boss' behalf.

"I don't know how you put words into the coolest man's mouth," he said, "so I'll just say thank you."

"WALL-E" was the best animated feature and "Tropic Thunder" was best comedy.

"There's a lot of awards out there, and this one, I think, has the most meaning," said writer, director and star Ben Stiller. "I'm not just saying that because this is the only award our movie was nominated for."

Richard Gere received a standing ovation as he accepted the Joel Siegel award, which recognizes an entertainer's humanitarian efforts. The 59-year-old actor is a longtime supporter of Tibet.

"Clearly I'm undeserving of this," Gere said, urging the audience to "channel all that energy to Tibet."

The 14th annual Critics' Choice Awards, presented by the Broadcast Film Critics Association at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, honored cinematic excellence in 17 categories. The group, which represents more than 200 TV, radio and online critics from the United States and Canada, founded the Critics' Choice Awards in 1995.

"Mother" cast makes more gravy

Actors Neil Patrick Harris (L) and Alyson Hannigan of the comedy series Reuters – Actors Neil Patrick Harris (L) and Alyson Hannigan of the comedy series 'How I Met Your Mother' pose …

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – The cast of CBS' hot comedy series "How I Met Your Mother" got something extra for the holidays: salary bumps.

But in a sign of the tough economic times, the five stars didn't hit the mother lode despite the show's solid ratings and strong syndication sales.

After months of renegotiations, Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan recently signed new deals with producing studio 20th Century Fox TV that will bring their salaries up to $90,000-$120,000 per episode.

On average, that's between two and three times what they made before -- a big raise, especially given that Radnor, Segel and Smulders were virtually unknown when the show premiered in 2005. Still, it's lower than the pay for the ensembles of other comedies at similar points in their runs, like NBC's "The Office."

The new pacts, retroactive to the beginning of this season, the show's fourth, also add an extra year to the actors' original seven-year contracts.

The "Mother" salary renegotiations followed lucrative rerun deals that could potentially bring Fox $2.5 million-$3 million per episode in the first cycle. They also come as "Mother" continues to enjoy ratings momentum, which started after the writers strike ended last spring and carried over to this fall.

The lead voice cast on "The Simpsons" are among the highest-paid actors on television after securing raises of about 30 percent to nearly $400,000 per episode last year.

Tom Cruise calls Travolta death 'horrific'

NEW YORK – "Horrific" is how Tom Cruise described the sudden death of the son of his friend, John Travolta.

Cruise struggled to maintain his composure as he spoke on "The View" about last week's death of 16-year-old Jett Travolta.

"John just adored him, both of his children," Cruise said haltingly. "... It's something that I don't have the words for."

The 46-year-old actor called Travolta and his wife, Kelly Preston, "doting parents, just wonderful people." The couple have an 8-year-old daughter, Ella Bleu.

Jett died at the family vacation home in Grand Bahama. He had a history of seizures and was found unconscious in a bathroom. Results of an autopsy performed Monday were not released, but a Bahamas undertaker said the teen's death certificate listed "seizure" as the cause of death.

In response to a question from "The View" host Barbara Walters, Cruise defended Scientology, which he and the Travoltas follow, against rumors that have swirled since Jett Travolta died.

The church doesn't discourage conventional medical care, Cruise declared — "actually, the exact opposite."

"They say, 'Get your physical, get your medication, get your physical illnesses handled.'"

Taped Thursday, Cruise's appearance on the ABC daytime talk show is scheduled to air Friday. His latest film is "Valkyrie."

According to a source close to the couple, nothing has been made official. The supermodel might have to wait a little longer to receive her ring.
