Impact of Violence Against Children
As we remember the children who suffered and passed on due to violence, I would like to challenge the cultural mindset of Msian parents here.
What do you define as child abuse or violence against a child?
Hitting causing bodily harm? Any physical attack that can cause harm or death to the child? Starving the child to death?
What about canning, senseless beating/heavy smacking, verbal abuse, screaming and shouting at a child? These are pretty common in almost all households in Msia and normally done in the name of "discipline". Will you consider these as child abuse/violence?
Personally, I feel that anything that can cause harm or disrupt the normal development and healthy growth of a child is a form of abuse/violence. This includes providing a safe, secure and respectful environment to grow in where the child can develop a positive sense of self and community. Abuse/violence is not merely physical, but can be mental, emotional and psychological. The worst scars are the unseen scars that will define the individual for the rest of his/her life.
If you are truly against child abuse, say no to physical and verbal punishments. Children should be taught NOT scolded or canned to learn. What you do to them, they will do to others or even their own children in the future. If any of you are wondering where your children learn to hit, scold or curse others, you need not look far to find the culprit. Most times, they learn these from their parents and from their environment (which parents have a responsibility to ensure it is condusive for their child's growth and development).
Discipline is about teaching. It is not about punishments or rewards. Say "No" to violence against children.
