Eva Herzigova Gets A Second Act

Paris – Eva Herzigova rolled out her new ready-to-wear Fall 2010 collection recently in Paris.

Herzigova, best known as the greatest model to come from what was Czechoslovakia, has tried various second acts to her successful modeling career, with varying success. But her link-up with the deep-pocketed French group Etam looks like being a winner. The Czech model unveiled her debut collection for Etam's lady like label 1.2.3 that will be known as Eva Herzigova, Un, Deux, Trois, or one, two, three in English.

"It's what I'd like to wear on a great first date. I know that I am not truly a designer, but I think, thanks to all my experiences seeing and wearing great clothes, I have a sense what many women want to wear," the 37-year-old Herzigova said in an interview.

Thanks to contracts for Wonderbra and Guess, Herzigova is an instantly recognizable bold face name in fashion. Her presentation on Thursday, April 8, was mobbed with French camera crews and scores of journalists.

Asked to define her ideal date when wearing the collection, Herzigova said, with a giggle: "Oh, I'd begin the evening at an opera La Scala, or red carpet event, because that's the world I live in, then cocktails and dancing in a fine private house, and then, if things are going well, it's back to my place!"

The collection, though far from path-breaking, is a pretty clever Mittel-European take of French romanticism; with looks varying from sharply tailored all-white tuxedos, echoing an easy-to-wear classic Yves Saint Laurent pant suit, to natty putty-hued trench coats in micro fiber mixes or charming arty paisley silk blouses, rather Brigitte Bardot inspired.

"It's for a woman who is not afraid to show herself off," said Herzigova, for whom this a second attempt as a designer.

Six years ago she created five collections of well-received beachwear, but lacking management and financial backing she eventually shelved that project.

"I had just become a mum with my little boy George, so being a model, mum and entrepreneur all at the same time was just too much," she explained.

And, so, enter Laurent Milchior, whose family controls Etam, a publicly quoted group that posted 2009 sales of 1.020 billion euros, or $ 1.357 billion, and also bankrolled the recent underwear collection from Russia supermodel Natalia Vodianova.

"She's an ideal designer, because she has immense experience in wearing great fashion, as well as being a perfect representative of the brand. We are expecting great things," explained Milchior, who plans to roll out the collection in several hundred boutiques.
