This week’s Trailer Park takes a look at the latest from “The Last Airbender,” the new “Twilight Saga” adventure and a gay rights documentary sure to upset at least one religious organization.
Not too long ago I was covering the red carpet at the Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards. While there, I interviewed famed “The Sixth Sense” director, M. Night Shyamalan who could not be more excited about his upcoming summer release, “The Last Airbender.” The film stars “Twilight” co-star Jackson Rathbone and “Slumdog Millionaire’s” Dev Patel. It's based on the popular animated television series about a fictitious world where humans can control the various elements: fire, earth, water and air.
According to Shyamalan, fans are going to be blown away by the special effects in the film, which will be shown in 3-D where available. The movie doesn’t come out until July 2, but multiple trailers are available now to whet your pallet.
It appears there will be a battle of the fantasy films that weekend - on Wednesday, June 30, Rathbone’s other famous franchise film, “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” is set to hit theaters.
The intensity of fan interest around the “Twilight” films has not decreased in the slightest and will likely ring up huge numbers at the box office. The third installment of the massively popular series is directed by David Slade and looks to really draw the line in the sand between team Edward and team Jacob fans as this one is all about vampires going head to head with werewolves.
As an interesting side note, it was recently announced that Bill Condon will direct the film’s fourth release, “Breaking Dawn.” Before taking his swing at Kristen Stewart, Rob Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, Condon’s last big feature film was with Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson in “Dreamgirls.” It should be interesting to see what the man behind such a successful musical will bring to the “Twilight” franchise.
Completely unrelated to mythical creatures and element-bending super humans, is the new politically charged documentary, “8: The Mormon Proposition.” Director Reed Cowan says he initially planned on making a film about gay teen homelessness and suicide in Utah, but switched his focus to Mormon ideology because of how it contributes to the homophobia that causes these problems in the first place.
Cowan, who grew up gay in Utah himself, specifically examines the Mormon church’s part in helping California’s Proposition 8 pass, which made it illegal for two members of the same sex to marry in that state. The film, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, will debut in select cities June 18.
